Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health disorders in today’s society, affecting millions of people worldwide. Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, isolation and changes in appetite and sleep patterns. Anxiety is characterized by excessive worry or fear that can interfere with an individual’s daily activities. Both conditions can have a negative impact on a person’s physical, emotional and social well-being. The exact causes of depression and anxiety remain unknown; however, it is believed to be connected to certain genetic factors as well as life experiences such as trauma or significant stressors (e.g., job loss). Depression and anxiety often go hand-in-hand ” those who suffer from one disorder frequently experience symptoms of the other as well. Additionally, individuals may experience cycles where one condition exacerbates the other leading to further distress over time. Fortunately, both depression and anxiety are treatable through psychotherapy (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy), medications (e.g., antidepressants) or lifestyle modifications (e.g., increased exercise). It is important for individuals to seek professional help if they believe they may be suffering from either condition so that an appropriate course of treatment can be determined based on their specific needs/symptoms. With proper care, recovery is attainable for those struggling with depression and/or anxiety.
