Why is there a conflict between Karen and Ted?

Karen Leary being the manager was not successfully able to effectively manage the cultural difference and mindset of her new employee Ted Chung. One conflict between Karen Leary and Ted Chung was the cultural diversity that gave way to Ted Chung being unhappy with the culture of being part of Merrill Lynch and Karen Leary debating as to what would be her next step regarding dealing with Ted Chungs demands. Ted Chung was of Taiwanese and an older man with experience in the finance sector but back in his native country. Taiwanese investors were main group of people Chung was tasked to attract. Karen Leary did not grasp entirely the Taiwanese culture or create an opportunity for Ted Chung to use his skills and experience with other investors besides Taiwanese. Karen could have had Ted Chung work as a team member in a project to mold in the culture of Merrill Lynch beforehand. Based on the class discussions and lecture on cultural diversity in the workplace, collaboration with co-workers of different background, genders, and races improves the overall work environment and creates opportunities for employees. The conflict between Karen Leary and Ted Chung of not understanding the Taiwanese culture and the Merrill Lynch culture created a tense state. The fault for the conflict does not rest entirely with Ted. Although, Ted Chung had an introverted behavior approach when his request of his private office was not provided. If Karen Leary would have managed Ted Chungs cultural background and Ted Chung would have engaged more in a team-oriented environment and worked together to see eye to eye, they probably could have worked out a solution for both.
