It can be argued that the most severe crimes merit the most severe punishment, specifically capital punishment. Although considered cruel and unusual, life imprisonment may be viewed as a type of torture, thereby making the death penalty comparatively more humane. The death penalty is frequently condemned due to instances of innocent individuals being wrongly convicted in the past; however, many of these arguments were made before the progressions in DNA analysis. In a crime scene, the probability of coincidental genetic matches can be as low as 1 in billions to 1 in several quadrillion, decreasing the margin of error to under 1%.
Thanks to DNA analysis, the death penalty would have minimal errors in identifying the convicted person. With the assurance that innocent individuals will not be wrongly executed, there is no downside to administering justice to criminals.
...Although no justice system can claim absolute accuracy, if we as humans reject systems that are not 100% foolproof, then "The inevitability of a mistake should not serve as grounds to eliminate the death penalty any more than the risk of having a fatal wreck should make automobiles illegal..." Furthermore, since 1976, there have been no documented cases of innocent individuals being sentenced to death.
Showing prisoners more sympathy than the actual victim creates a negative impression. "Society is justly ordered when each person receives what is due to him." However, crime persists as criminals believe they can rely on lawyers and the appeal process to escape the death penalty or incarceration. If capital punishment were not subject to these constraints, crime rates might decrease. Despite prison being a longstanding punishment for breaking the law, crime has not shown
any decline.
The death penalty is considered necessary in our society as it acts as a deterrent to crime and maintains order. Unfortunately, we have yet to discover a more effective method of reducing or slowing down crime. By imposing appropriate punishment, society can safeguard its morals and restore justice by holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions. Capital punishment exemplifies how a society should function by deterring future crimes and addressing high crime rates. Implementing the death penalty ensures justice is served, providing murderers with incarceration instead of allowing them to remain unpunished. However, overcrowded prisons become a concern for other inmates who may not have committed such atrocious crimes but now must coexist among them.
The death penalty serves the purpose of preventing harm from convicted murderers and avoiding multiple life sentences. Even if a prisoner is sentenced to life without parole, there are no assurances against potential harm within prison walls or opportunities for escape or parole release. Thus, preserving the death penalty becomes crucial in preventing future crimes, particularly considering perceived deficiencies in the current parole system. By enforcing the death penalty, we eliminate any possibility of recidivism by the prisoner.
Implementing the death penalty in states is crucial because it serves as a powerful deterrent for criminals. This is due to the fact that death is people's greatest fear. If criminals know they will face a sentence of death instead of life in prison, they would opt for a lifetime of incarceration. Furthermore, executing murderers effectively instills fear in other criminals and dissuades them from committing crimes.
The family of a murder victim will never find peace as long as the person who killed their
loved one is living safely in prison. The death penalty would provide them with a sense of justice, guaranteeing that the offender cannot further endanger others.
