aggression rises the Indians began moving closer to the military posts for protection from the ranchers as well as enemy tribes. Although the Indians of Brazil had a tough time assimilating with the ranchers and other people the North American Indians faced similar problems.

Some believe that the Indians of North America had a harder time and faced more cruel punishments. As the times changed so did the Canelas’ view of themselves as a people. They began to except the fact that in Brazilian culture they would always be on the bottom rung of Brazilian society.The Canela were placed on a five hundred square mile lot which also had them surrounded on all sides with other people.

This land was insufficient to raise crops and also was not big enough to support hunting and gathering. Since this was the case they had to turn to a slash and burn style of agriculture which also meant that they had to cut new fields. As they were cutting new fields further and further from camp they began just moving the location of the tribe closer to the crops. It was easier to move the camp than to haul the produce from the field and back camp.The Canela also lived in huts called mud and wattle which was considered to be a very advanced type of housing. This was always a question for anthropologist because they could understand how these people were capable of building these advanced huts but were still unable to raise live stock.

They would eat the adolescent animal before it had a chance to reproduce. Another way the Canela had adapted was through its

way of life. Initially the Canela people were a military style Indian. Now that they were living on this land surrounded by people they soon lost their military lifestyle.Since there was no wars going on the younger Canela people began to question the reason for military discipline. There is no war and no war to train for.

Their new peace keeping life led to the deterioration of discipline among Canelas youth. Another change among the Canela people has to do with religion. Before their culture change they would look to themselves for a reason why something is happening. Now they look to miracles for why a famine is occurring.

The only reason why they changed to looking toward miracles is due to the fact that some people were experiencing coincidence and not miracles.As we look back we can begin to compare the life styles of the Irish Tinkers to the Canela people. Although they are entirely different people and come from different areas there are some very strong similarities. Both in Tinker society and Canela society the idea of family is a very strong value. They both give respect to their elders and protect the ones in their family.

They are also both viewed in society as lower class. Also both Canela and Tinker had to adapt to either make money or produce food.The tinkers would make or fix items in return for money and the Canela had to change they way they looked at agriculture in order to adapt into a new living environment. Though the tinkers and the Canela both come from different cultures we can agree that both cultures are hard working

people and reward hard work with social status among their cultures. The Canela are rewarded for success in battle and the tinkers are rewarded for success in collection of scrap metal to be used for fixing and building items to be sold.
