The American Renaissance era saw the utilization of native dialect, history, landscape, and characters in literature such as novels, poems and short stories. These works aimed to explore uniquely American issues of that time including temperance, abolitionism, religious tolerance, scientific progress, the Native American situation as well as the expanding western frontier. The great variety of subjects covered by the period's short fiction included Gothic romance, historical fiction of colonial America and progressive social problem tales among others. This helped create a first generation of great American literature.
Posthumously published sensational thrillers such as those by Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne are widely recognized by critics as representative examples of the era's short fiction. These authors used short stories or novellas to produce parables which explored literary and political concerns. Some critics ha
...ve hailed some of the short fiction produced during this time as some of the best ever written in America. Transcendentalism philosophy was closely associated with this cultural rebirth period known as The American Renaissance.
Transcendentalism emphasizes the innate goodness of humans and the possibility of discovering profound truths through intuition rather than reason, while also highlighting the interconnectedness of all things. Scholars, ministers, and intellectuals in Concord, Massachusetts promoted Transcendentalism as well as social reform, educational innovation, and other human rights causes. The Dial magazine was created by Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson in 1840 to provide a platform for leading writers such as Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Bronson Alcott, George Ripley, Fuller, and Emerson who were associated with both the American Renaissance and Transcendentalism.
