Each advertisement employs different approaches, but they all tap into basic appeals that target the customer. In this analysis, two ads will be examined, based on the psychological research conducted by Henry Murray. Fowles identified fifteen emotional appeals commonly found in advertisements. Fowles' concept centers around the idea that customers are constantly trying to avoid being easily deceived.
Coca Cola Soda Goes Along (1942): In this advertisement, a group of joyful army soldiers can be seen enjoying their bottles of soda. The image creates a sense of friendship and collective happiness, targeting the consumer's need for affiliation (78). The moment of enjoyment depicted in the picture may inspire soldiers to successfully complete their peace-keeping missions (82). The soldiers are also
...seeking attention and acknowledgement, as they are seen enjoying their drinks. These appeals aim to persuade customers to purchase the soda.
Phillip Morris, "Gently Does It" (1955) Bowler: This advertisement is for Philip Morris cigarettes and uses different appeals to attract customers. Firstly, the ad shows a picture of a woman who appears delighted by the gentle touch of a man.
