In The Awakening, Edna Pontellier undergoes a series of events that lead her to realize she cannot go back to her traditional female role in a male-dominated society. Similarly, in Thelma and Louise, two women break free from convention and take on male roles.
Thelma is a housewife with a sexist husband who controls her life and activities. According to Thelma, her husband never allows her to do anything enjoyable and expects her to stay at home while he goes out. In addition, we discover that Thelma is dissatisfied with their sexual relationship after having sex with J.
During a chat with her friend Louise, D. discloses that she had an atypical satisfying sexual experience. Louise is a coffee shop server in her thirties.
Like Thelma, she encounters comparable obstacles such as difficulties with her significant other and a feeling of discontentment with e
...xistence. While on a two-day trip, they encounter an individual who attempts to sexually assault Thelma. In response, Louise kills him. This occurrence alters the identities of both women, as they adopt characteristics traditionally associated with masculinity.
Despite societal norms dictating that certain roles are reserved for men, Thelma breaks free from these boundaries as she robs a market. Along with locking a policeman to luggage and punishing a trucker in an unforgettable manner, they use slang language throughout their actions. As a result of their courageous deeds, Thelma and Louise become awakened, ultimately reaching a point in their flight where Thelma asks Louise if she is also awake. Louise responds affirmatively, stating that one could definitely call it awakening.
Thelma says she is also wide awake and feels different, like everything looks different
She thinks the other person understands what she means.
The sentiment of having a fresh start and anticipation is conveyed in the text. In the final scenes of the film, the police present a choice to surrender and be imprisoned or opt for freedom. Louise argues against sacrificing Thelma, while Thelma proposes evading capture and directs attention towards the Grand Canyon as a destination. The two exchange a smile.
In the last scene of "Thelma and Louise", a car is seen soaring in the air while B.B. King's renowned song "Better Not Look Down" plays in the backdrop, advising to progress forward and not reflect on history. The movie portrays Thelma and Louise shattering societal shackles to embrace their own aspirations.
Women may act according to their own desires, in spite of societal expectations. If a truck driver behaves rudely, they may retaliate by destroying his vehicle.
