Dickens demonstrates the theme of the consequences of one's actions through the contrasting characters of Dr. Manette and Madame DeFarge. The young Evremonde brothers' cruel actions lead to Dr. Manette's 18-year imprisonment in the Bastille. Despite initially condemning the family, the doctor is able to forgive them and even treats one of their members as his own son rather than an enemy. By refusing to let his suffering consume him, Dr. Manette shows the importance of taking control of one's fate.
Manette lives happily with his daughter, Lucie, Charles Darnay, and their child. In contrast, Madame Defarge's desire for revenge against the Evremondes transforms her into a coarse, vengeful, and hateful person lacking compassion. She even attempts to harm Lucie and her innocent child. Madame Defarge's vengeful behavior ultimately leads to her own downfall a
...s she is killed while trying to kill Lucie. Despite experiencing similar atrocities, Dr. Manette and Madame Defarge have different outcomes. 2) SETTING: A Tale of Two Cities takes place in Paris during the French Revolution, a period caused by the malicious, selfish, and uncaring actions of the aristocrats who mistreat and exploit the poor. This is exemplified by two scenes: first, starving peasants resort to scooping wine from the ground due to extreme hunger while the aristocrats waste money on unnecessary parties. Second, Marquis De St Evremonde runs over and kills a child but gives the child's father 2 gold coins as a means to alleviate his guilt.
During the French Revolution, the wealthy faced severe consequences, including execution by the guillotine. At first, the revolution brought liberation to the suffering peasants by freeing them from aristocratic control. However
as the revolution progressed, the situation reversed, and the peasants used their newfound power to ruthlessly persecute the aristocrats through widespread imprisonment and executions.
The abuse of power will lead to the death of peasants during the reign of terror. Those who commit wrongs will face severe consequences, while those who strive to do good will prevail. Madame Defarge, the aristocrats, and even peasants influenced by the mob mentality will endure agonizing deaths due to their harmful actions. Conversely, Dr. Manette's desire for forgiveness enables him to lead a happy and peaceful life.
