Epilepsy Initial History: A 15-year-old boy had symptoms during a game of touch football. He showed extreme anger towards his friend and suddenly passed out, falling to the ground. During this incident, his body became stiff with arms and legs stretched out, and he stopped breathing for approximately 10 seconds.
The patient experienced vigorous, synchronized, muscular spasms and intense hyperventilation for approximately 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, they became limp and confused before seeking medical attention in the emergency room.
Possible causes for the seizures include:
- Vascular pathology such as transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke
- Hypertensive encephalopathy
- Tumor or other neoplastic issue
- Drug or alcohol use and/or withdrawal
- Endocrine issues including hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, hypernatremia, hypocalcemia, and hypercalcemia
