Being an adherent of the Catholic faith, I steadfastly believe that everyone's life is invaluable and holy, granted to us by God. We should respect and cherish it because we are all created in His image. In line with God's commandment "Thou shall not kill", it is clear that we don't possess the authority to end our own lives or those of others based on personal desires. The intrinsic value and honor associated with human life must be protected from its beginning till its natural end.
Euthanasia might be seen as an infringement of medical ethics, in which physicians vow to preserve life and prevent death. My stance on euthanasia is ambivalent. I respect the patient's rights and comprehend their decision to choose euthanasia, yet I question whether they are truly in a sound mental state
...at that time (considering their suffering or illness) genuinely desiring to terminate their existence. Moreover, if the individual concerned was someone dear to me like my parent, I ponder over if I could reconcile with such a choice.
I hold the view that in cases where a person has drafted a living will, indicating their desire to end their life if confronted with a terminal disease, I would honor their desires. Nonetheless, my uncertainty lies in whether or not I could personally fulfill such a request. A concern that deeply troubles me is the possibility of misuse should euthanasia be legalized. Is there a risk of evolving into a society where individuals prematurely terminate others' lives under the pretext of euthanasia? This question definitely needs more thought and discussion.
