Comment on the conflict The conflict between the passenger Faisal and Nadeem Riaz already started when Faisal entered the taxi, and gave Nadeem the directions, where he starts by calling him ‘Uncle’. Later in the story, the girl gets out and the boy again starts talking to Nadeem, still with that carefree tone calling him ‘Riaz Uncle’, Nadeem answers polite and even calling the boy ‘Gentleman’.

The boy is saying that Nadeem ‘uses’ the country, which I think is wrong, because Nadeem has a green card, and is driving a taxi all night to support his family. The boy in the back seat is in my opinion talking nonsense and being arrogant, because even if he is right about the things he said about Nadeem, there’s no way he can be sure, because he doesn’t know him or his story at all. Being an immigrant is hard work “being in this country – he’s expected to act a certain way, how, exactly, he doesn’t know.

Says Nadeem Riaz in the short story, and I think that being an immigrant, there is a lot of unwritten rules you have to follow, or you will be labeled as a lazy outsider who abuses their new country. I also think there is a huge amount of generalization about immigrants. Take for example in Denmark, once a few immigrants has committed a crime of some sort, or is a gang member, the public thinks that’s the case with all immigrants, and that prediction is very hard to change, if you for example is the stereotype of someone who actually could be a

criminal.

In this story, we hear about Nadeem Riaz, who is a polite hard working taxi driver that works all night to support his family. Still, the couple entering his taxi, is somehow associating him with a lower class immigrant who just ‘uses’ his country, even though they don’t know anything about him or his story, other than he drives a taxi in the middle of the night and is an immigrant. In my opinion the reason some immigrants have such a hard time adjusting to the norms of a new country, is because of the predictions and the generalization.
