In my society, respecting of elder people and especially those that are age mates to one’s parents is considered to be a social norm. Young people in my society are expected at all times to respect those people who are elder than them by addressing them with respect when talking to them and always obeying them irrespective of the fact you know them or not or nature between one and them. One day, my neighbor, a middle aged woman accused me of smashing her car’s windscreen. My attempt to convince her that I was not responsible landed on deaf years and she even reported me to the authorities and my parents were forced to pay the damages despite my effort to convince her I was not responsible. She later came to realize that it
...was her own son who had smashed it andher attempt to ask for forgiveness from me did not end up well as I humiliated her in front my friends, parents and his son. This was due to the acrimony she subjected me to by reporting to police and even making me to be held answerable for a crime I did not commit.
The criticism and condemnation that I received from my friends and parents made me to become remorseful and regret having acted in such a harsh and disrespectful manner to my parents. Despite the fact that they were all aware of the pain the woman made me go through, they condemned me of being disrespectful to a woman who is age mate to my mother and more so due to disrespecting her in front of young people. remorseful and regret for having done that and violating the social norm. The social norm was adopted by the society in order to ensure that young people respect elder people at all times irrespective of the differences that exist between them. Young people are expected to uphold this norm at all time and accord respect to the elders in the society.
