Widespread freshwater pollution affects all areas without exception. Although residing in rural communities is enjoyable, examining the reality of nonpoint surface runoff from river bottom farm lands, manufacturing companies, and rock quarries reveals hidden issues.

To sustain cleaner fresh water in our lakes, streams, and rivers, my strategy involves educating the community. My plan begins with conducting extensive research on the local waterway pollution to accurately educate the community about the issue. The primary concern affecting our area's waterways is wastewater and surface runoff. Due to various contributing factors, it will take six months to conduct comprehensive research on the issue, which is an appropriate timeframe covering the farming period in our area.

final stages of curing and stripping take place in enclosed spaces during winter. Over the first two months, I plan to conduct interviews with local businesses and farmers regarding their use of chemicals, the methods of administration, and their reasons for choosing a particular chemical or applicant. During the next two months, I will perform extensive research online and through our local extension office on the most preferred chemicals and methods of use. Finally, to conclude the research period during months five and six, I will revisit the same farmers and businesses for additional interviews.

Incorporating research findings into documentation will aid in understanding the impact of their usage. Collaborating with local conservation officers will provide insightful statistics for the Water Resource Plan. Developing an educational program can enhance citizen awareness within our county, starting with children

in schools and 4-H groups. This approach will encourage a proactive stance towards the potential dangers associated with pollutants that could harm nearby farms. Additionally, it offers an opportunity to demonstrate the possible outcomes caused by pollution.

The initial phase will take no more than three months. To engage the youth in the region, I intend to create a coloring book based on pictures captured during the process that illustrate the stages and impacts of pollution. Additionally, for older children, I will create a pamphlet that contains all essential information. This pamphlet will serve as a prototype for a brief informational magazine designed for adults as well.

This pamphlet, small magazine, and slide presentation will cover topics such as fresh water supplies, water pollution, contaminants, monitoring of contaminants, surface runoff, wastewater, necessary changes for preserving waterways, and benefits for everyone. A significant emphasis will be placed on surface runoff due to the vast farming community in the area. The overflow generated by surface runoff infiltrates waterways and causes effects such as erosion of land and flooding, resulting in environmental and agricultural issues. The program will conclude with a list of both daily small changes and more extensive alterations to be made over time. Towards the end of the second month, local schools, groups, extension offices, and the business group with monthly meetings will be contacted so that they can be educated on the program's mission. This approach ensures that multiple groups can access the presentation and have copies readily available.

When individuals are able to witness visuals and information pertaining to their own communities, they are more likely to engage in making a substantial change instead

of adopting the mindset of "not my problem". The final three months will be dedicated to educating local business workers as well as farmers, who will have a more flexible schedule to learn about the research and documentation produced. When farmers have a comprehensive understanding of the efforts being made to improve waterways, which they rely on for the success of their crops and livestock. Despite challenges that may arise during the research, production, and execution of education, taking the time to thoroughly examine all aspects of the issue with an open mind will ensure that all questions are addressed.

By making small changes across the entire community, it can have a significant positive impact on the environment. While some farmers may be resistant to suggestions regarding changes to farming supplies, as someone who was raised and operates a farm, I understand the necessary changes to sustain the environment. It is important to reassure them that they are not being judged directly.
