According to data compiled by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nearly 1 in 5 Americans has mental illness each year, enduring conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, Bekiempis (2014). The study comes amid rising scrutiny of the ability of the country's health care system to handle mental illness issues. With half of Americans suffering from mental illnesses living without the necessary medical services and others only receiving minimal care, reforms on the nation's Mental Health Care system is a priority for most U.S lawmakers. The unprecedented agreement in Congress on the need for mental health reform resulted in introduction of several bills, among them the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016. The Mental Health Reform Act of 2016, is a bill about the mental health crisis and to guarantee that mental health plans are successfully helpi
...ng individuals with mental illness by using evidence based on best practices. According to www.govtrack.us, the bill seeks to improve coordination between federal agencies and healthcare departments that provide services to people with mental illness as well as ensuring accountability and assessment of mental health programs.
The bill was sponsored by Republican Senator Lamar Alexander from Tennessee. His main office is located in Washington, D.C. 455 Dickson, Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510. His phone and fax contacts are 202-224-4944 and 202-228-3398 respectively. His website is http://alexander.senate.gov/. Alexander is one of the most bipartisan Republican members of the Senate who is a strong supporter of the people's right to life. He is the head of the Senate committee in charge of health, education, labor and pensions legislation. Coupled with his great wealth in experience, I
believe Alexander is the best candidate in restoring the country's mental health from a state of decline.
