Social Support for the Psychological Well-Being of Students Essay Example
The main point of this study was to examine if social support has an effect on psychological well-being in undergraduate college students. Specifically, the performance of each group was evaluated under two conditions of high and low social support. The results of this study supported both of the expected hypotheses. Hypothesis one stated that undergraduate college students who report higher social support have greater or even positive outcomes for psychological well-being. Hypothesis two stated that undergraduate college students who report little to no social support have lower or even negative outcomes for psychological well-being. The findings showed a significant difference between high and low social support, where high social support lead to positive outcomes for psychological well-being and little to no social support led to negative outcomes of psychological well-being.
Within the literature of social support and
...its effect, the results from this study appear to be aligned with past research examinations done with similar participants. In a study managed by Klann-Yobas, et al., (2016), about how social support has an effect on psychological well-being, it was found that undergraduate college students who received more social support reported higher psychological well-being, higher core self evaluations, and overall higher life satisfaction. In another study managed by Liu, Li, Lang, and Cai, (2016), about how core self-evaluations and coping styles have significant effects on psychological well-being, showing a significance in that participants who have higher social support reported higher core self-evaluations and higher psychological well-being. In yet another study, it showed that having people around us who we can talk to and having positive and good quality interactions with are necessary in having positive mental health (Hefner and
Eisenberg, 2009). These studies show that if you have high social support in such a way that it's positive and the quality of the relationship is good, then you would have an overall positive psychological well-being outcome. Although the results are supported, there are still a few limitations in this research study.
First, only psychology undergraduate college students from California State University, Northridge were sampled. This sample is not a good representation for all college students. Only the psychology department received the questionnaire, different majors and universities may have different levels of social support. Second, only a specific age group of students were sampled.
Having only certain age groups doesn’t show the overall population of college students. To show a wider range of students especially including students who are of older age could have a different outcome to the study. Through future research we may be able to further examine this study and could explore the reason as to why having higher social support contributes to having better psychological well-being compared to those who have low or even no social support. If future researchers were to take into consideration these limitations into their study, looking at a population that is outside the age range of 17-21, students from other universities, and different major departments, their results would have a better generalization of a population in and outside CSUN. Furthermore, research can be done to see if older students have less social support compared to younger students.
