What is Voice Over Internet Protocol?

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a modern telecommunications technology which enables people to make telephone calls over the internet. VoIP allows users to make phone calls using their existing internet connection instead of a traditional landline or cellular network. This technology has revolutionized the way we communicate, allowing us to make and receive phone calls from anywhere in the world without having to rely on expensive international calling plans or long-distance charges.The most common form of VoIP is called IP telephony, which uses the same protocols as other forms of internet communication like email, Instant Messaging and web browsing. This type of system works by breaking up your voice into digital ‘packets’ that are sent over the internet rather than through wires like with traditional telephones. At each end point these packets are reassembled back into an audible conversation for both parties involved. Depending on your service provider you may also have access to additional features such as call forwarding, voicemail and conferencing options. One major benefit of using VoIP is its cost efficiency compared to traditional telecommunication systems; since no physical cables need be established between two points for communication there are considerable savings in installation costs alone. Additionally since all conversations take place online there is no need for costly international roaming charges making it ideal for those who frequently travel abroad or have friends and family living overseas they want to keep in contact with regularly. The quality of sound can also be improved depending on your provider’s bandwidth so conversations should generally remain clear even when talking at great distances apart from one another.
