What is Thinking?
Thinking is the process of using our minds to consider, analyze and understand information or ideas. It involves forming connections between our existing knowledge and new experiences, and then drawing conclusions from those connections. Thinking allows us to derive meaning from our environment, make decisions about how to act in a given situation, and plan for the future. The most important aspect of thinking is that it is a voluntary process that requires effort; we have to actively choose to think about something. We can also control the direction of our thinking: through deliberate practice, we can hone our ability to think critically and creatively. This means considering multiple perspectives on a given issue, considering alternatives solutions, exploring the implications of different choices and evaluating the outcomes of one’s decisions. Thinking also involves metacognitionthinking about one’s own thought processes in order to understand them better and become more effective thinkers. Through self-awareness, reflection, questioning assumptions and evaluating evidence we are able to develop our capacity for critical thinking as well as creative problem solving skills which are essential for success in all areas of life. In short, thinking is an essential part of being human; it enables us to learn from experience and make decisions that will help us achieve our goals. It is an active process that requires effort but with practice it can be an incredibly powerful tool for understanding ourselves better as well as improving our lives.
