What is Social Security Disability?
Social Security Disability (SSD) is a program designed to provide financial assistance to individuals who are unable to work due to physical or mental disability. It is administered by the Social Security Administration and funded through payroll taxes collected from employers, employees and self-employed individuals. SSD provides monthly payments on a sliding scale based on an individual’s previous earnings record, as well as health insurance coverage for those eligible. In order to qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, applicants must meet certain criteria established by the Social Security Administration. Generally speaking, applicants must have worked in jobs covered by Social Security for at least five of the last ten years prior to becoming disabled. In addition, they must prove that their disabling condition has lasted or is expected to last for at least 12 months or longer, or result in death. Applicants may also be able to receive benefits if they can no longer perform any job available in significant numbers in the national economy due to their medical limitations. The process of applying for SSD can be lengthy and intimidating because it requires compiling medical records and evidence that support your claim of disability. Hiring an experienced attorney with knowledge about SSD laws can help you navigate this complex area of law. Once approved for SSD benefits, individuals typically receive payments until either: 1) their medical condition improves so that they become capable of working; 2) they reach retirement age; 3) when income exceeds predetermined limits; or 4) when other resources become available such as workers compensation awards or private pensions which would reduce the amount received from Social Security Disability wages reimbursement. Overall, while applying for SSD can be quite daunting and time consuming process , it serves an important purpose providing individuals with needed financial assistance during times when working is not possible due them suffering from physical or mental disabilities . Thus , understanding eligibility requirements , gathering necessary documents and talking with experts can all go long way towards helping someone obtain much – needed funds through this government – sponsored program .
