What is Musicology?
Musicology is the scholarly study of music, encompassing many aspects of music including history, composition, performance and analysis. It encompasses a wide range of topics from the history and development of various musical genres to the activities involved in making and performing music. Musicologists often specialize in particular areas such as early music, popular music studies or ethnomusicology. The discipline of Musicology is a fascinating one that can be studied at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level. At undergraduate level, students may take courses in topics such as music theory, history of Western Classical Music, world musics (including folk traditions), popular musics (including jazz) as well as other related topics such as ethnomusicology or the psychology of listening. Postgraduate programs often require students to complete a research project and provide an opportunity for more specialised study into specific areas of interest within the field. For example, some postgraduates may pursue a PhD in Musicology which involves undertaking extensive research into an area they are passionate about.Musicology also has practical applications beyond academia with many professional musicians using its teachings to inform their performance styles or compositions. In this way it can be seen as both an intellectual pursuit as well as a creative practice which helps to shape our understanding and appreciation for different types of musical expression. Furthermore, it is important to remember that studying Musicology not only allows us to gain knowledge about different forms but also gives insight into how these forms have evolved over time with cultural influences playing an integral part in this process.
