What is Modern Language Association?
The Modern Language Association (MLA) is an organization that sets academic standards for the written communication of research and scholarship in the humanities, primarily in English. It was founded in 1883 by a group of language and English teachers who wanted to standardize the writing conventions used in their field. The organization has since become one of the most widely recognized and respected organizations in academia, with its standards being adopted by schools, libraries, publishers, and other institutions around the world. The MLA sets out guidelines for how to format research papers, essays, articles, book reviews, manuscripts and other pieces of writing. Its style manual provides detailed instructions on how to cite sources properly within the text as well as how to create a bibliography or works cited page at the end of an assignment. The MLA also publishes guidelines on grammar usage and syntax rules which are designed to help authors create clear and effective prose that is free from errors or ambiguity. All these guidelines are updated periodically as new developments arise in language usage or technology changes occur which might impact written communication. In addition to setting standards for written communication, the MLA also hosts conferences throughout North America each year where academics can share their work with peers from other institutions. These conferences allow scholars from different disciplines to come together to learn about what’s new in their field without having to travel long distances. Additionally, many universities use these events as a way for faculty members from different departments within a university system to interact with one another on topics related to teaching and research topics relevant across disciplines. Overall, through its style manual guidelines and annual conferences held throughout North America, the Modern Language Association has been an important force behind promoting rigorous standards for academic writing since its foundation over 100 years ago.
