What is Local Area Networks?
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network of computers and other devices that are geographically close to each other, typically in the same building, or within a small physical area. It is used to share resources such as data files, printers, and applications over a single segmented network. Generally, LANs span between 10-100 meters in diameter and provide users with faster speeds than those achievable through wide area networks (WANs).The most common example of a LAN in use today is an Ethernet connection found in many homes and businesses. This type of network utilizes special cables for communication between two or more devices. The cables run from one device to another via various ports on each device. These connections can become quite complex when multiple users are accessing the same resources across multiple networks within larger organizations. LANs are beneficial because they allow users to access shared resources quickly without having to rely on slower internet connections or wait for data downloads from external sources. They also enable efficient communication between nodes by allowing direct communication instead of going through routers which increases security and reliability by reducing the risk of interference from outside sources. Additionally, since all connected devices are located close together, it helps reduce costs associated with setting up long-distance connections for WANs as well as decreases latency issues that can occur when relying solely on the Internet for communications purposes. Overall, LANs offer numerous advantages over traditional WAN’s including speedier access times, increased security and reliability due to direct connectivity between nodes, reduced latency issues caused by having all nodes located closely together along with decreased cost associated with setting up long-distance connections needed for wider area networking solutions making them an ideal choice for home networks as well as businesses looking to improve their local networking systems without increasing their budget significantly.
