What is Cell Phone Use?
in SchoolCell phone use in school has long been a controversial topic. On one hand, cell phones can be beneficial for students as they provide quick access to information, allow students to stay connected with their families, and can be used for educational purposes. On the other hand, cell phones can be disruptive to the learning process and create potential safety risks. As such, it is important for schools to have a policy regarding cell phone use in order to ensure that students are able to reap the benefits of having them without compromising safety or learning. First and foremost, schools should establish clear rules about when and where cell phones may be used on school property. For instance, some schools may prohibit the use of cell phones during class time or during lunch period while allowing them during passing periods or after school hours. This way, students are able to utilize their devices when necessary while avoiding disruptions in class or other areas of school activity. Additionally, some schools may opt to provide designated areas where students can make calls or send texts during lunchtime or after school hours so as not to disrupt classes. Next, schools should set expectations regarding appropriate content that may be accessed on student devices while at school. Schools should make it clear what types of websites are acceptable for student access as well as limiting any sites that could potentially cause disruption (such as social media sites). Additionally, it is important for educators and administrators alike to understand the importance of digital citizenship so that they can properly monitor a student’s online behavior on campus grounds and take appropriate action if needed. Finally, creating an effective policy regarding cell phone use will require clear communication between teachers and parents about expectations for proper device usage both inside and outside of school grounds. Teachers should also explain why these policies exist such as keeping kids safe from cyberbullying so that parents know why certain rules must be followed at all times (even outside of class time). All in all, implementing an effective policy regarding cell phone use in school requires thoughtful consideration from both educators and parents alike.
