not be there, it reluctantly affects a teenagers mental as they become adults.

Separation is not the only cause teenagers are left in single parent homes to grow up by their selves. There are circumstances that may not be by choice. Another leading cause why teenagers are raised in single parent home is due the incarceration of one of the parents or in worst cases death may be the result. Among the African American society, one in nine (11. 7%) African American males between the ages of 25 and 29 are currently incarcerated in a prison or jail. It has been document that one in six black men had been incarcerated as of 2001 and overall growth is continuing.

What is more astounding is that black men repetitiously return to prison which makes it difficult for a teenager to grow some type of attachment of bond for a father. With not having a father in a teenager’s life, it can cause them to become disobedient, defiant and ultimately affect a teen’s adult life. There is also a factor that leads to the cause of a parent raising a teen by their self which is death. In urban America, black men die every day of senseless deaths. For young African American men, more deaths are caused by homicide than any other cause.

In the wake of these tragedies are families; brothers, sister, mothers, fathers, wives, girlfriend, baby mothers and children. As a whole, the consequences of parent separation may be severe but the affects of leaving a teen to be raised by a single parent could prove to more of a problem. It is important that both parents contribute

and be present in the upbringing of a teen. Separation and incarceration can be avoided if the individual parents work to overcome it. Death on the other hand cannot be avoided but to die senselessly is pointless.
