Superstitious beliefs are deeply ingrained in our society and cannot be disregarded. These beliefs have infiltrated different areas of life, including politics and sports. It is typical for politicians to depend on astrological forecasts, while cricket players frequently carry a colored handkerchief and soccer players begin the game by leading with their right foot. Such superstitious rituals are widespread worldwide.
Basically, superstitious beliefs and practices are illogical assumptions based on a specific incident, which are then followed. Older superstitions often involve supernatural entities such as evil spirits or witches. This paper explores various superstitious beliefs worldwide.
ORIGIN OF SUPERSTITIONS
The origin of superstitions can be attributed to the beliefs held by people in ancient times. While many stem from fear, some are intended to dispel fear. Superstitious beliefs result from ignorance and
...a lack of logical thinking, yet they remain beliefs nonetheless.
Beliefs evolve into notions, which then develop into opinions and eventually gain prominence within society. As an example, consider a cricket player who nonchalantly happened to have a red handkerchief in his pocket and had an exceptional performance that day. He is likely to believe that his good luck was bestowed upon him by the handkerchief and subsequently carries it in his pocket every time he goes out to bat. Over time, some superstitions prove to be unfounded, while others manage to solidify themselves as perceived truths. Many superstitions serve as the foundation for certain societal customs and ultimately transform into enduring traditions.
The power of superstitions is so great that they evolve from being untrue beliefs into more powerful ideas that are adopted by the masses. One of the most widespread superstitions globally revolves around black cats
which originated in ancient Egypt where their goddess Bast was symbolized as a female black cat. In an effort to suppress other religions, Christians during that era persuaded individuals that black cats were demons. Furthermore, black cats became linked to misfortune due to their association with witchcraft during the 17th century.
There is a widespread belief that cats have the ability to detect and guard against supernatural entities. The concept of black cats being associated with luck or misfortune varies across cultures. In Britain and Japan, encountering a black cat is seen as fortunate; however, in the USA, India, and several European countries, it is considered unlucky. Moreover, there is a notion that if a cat approaches you, it brings good luck; conversely, if it moves away from you, it takes your good fortune with it. Crossing fingers is another commonly held superstition believed to attract favorable luck.
The idea of using a horseshoe as a lucky amulet came from the custom of making the sign of the cross. It was thought that performing this act could safeguard against malevolent spirits and enhance our likelihood of success, particularly in high-stakes situations such as gambling. The distinct U shape of a horseshoe, resembling a crescent moon, is believed to bring good fortune. Additionally, because a horseshoe offers protection for horses, it is also thought to possess protective qualities for humans.
Horseshoes are thought to bring good fortune because of their connection to blacksmithing, a highly regarded trade. They also resemble the Greek letter Omega (?) and have been traditionally painted on homes as a safeguard against illnesses. As per a Christian myth, St. Dunstan witnessed a devil and blocked
its entry into a house by hanging a horseshoe outside. It is also believed that horseshoes repel witches due to their purported aversion to horses.
Horseshoes have historically been employed as safeguards against evil spirits in numerous European and Middle Eastern households. Also, yawning was believed to create a vulnerability for evil spirits to enter the body and cause chaos. This theory stemmed from the fear that the soul might momentarily escape the body during a yawn. Furthermore, ancient observers noticed that newborns, striving to survive, would yawn shortly after birth as a natural reflex to get more oxygen into their lungs. Given the high infant mortality rate at that time, physicians attributed frequent deaths to yawning.
The helpless infant was unable to cover its mouth with a protective hand. In ancient Rome, physicians recommended that mothers be extra watchful in the early months of their baby's life and cover their newborn's yawns until they could do it on their own. Nowadays, it is considered impolite to not cover a yawn due to its contagiousness. The prevalence of superstitions related to bad luck shows that uneasiness about the number 13 affects the majority of people today in numerous ways. The ancient Egyptians associated the number 13 with death, which eventually led to the fear surrounding this number.
The origin of the widely known belief that 13 is unlucky is the story of the Last Supper. It is said that Judas, who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th guest at the meal. In ancient Rome, it was believed that witches gathered in groups of 12, with the 13th guest believed to be the devil. Numerologists also view 12 as a
"complete" number, as seen in various aspects such as the 12 months in a year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 tribes of Israel, and 12 apostles of Jesus. Therefore, the number 13 is associated with bad luck simply for exceeding completeness by 1. The number 13 is often associated with Friday the 13th, which stems from the traditional belief that Eve tempted Adam with the apple on a Friday.
Traditionally, significant events such as the Flood in the Bible, the confusion at the tower of Babel, and Jesus Christ's death are believed to have occurred on Fridays. As a result, Fridays that fall on the 13th day of the month have become associated with various unfortunate occurrences. This fear of the number 13 is known as Triskaidekaphobia and has led to more than 80% of high-rise buildings worldwide excluding a 13th floor. Additionally, hospitals and hotels often omit room number 13, and in Italy and France, the house between 12 and 14 is designated as 12?. Furthermore, many cities choose not to have a 13th street or avenue. It is also widely believed that breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck.
The origin of this superstition can be traced back to the belief that one's reflection in a mirror represents their soul or 'self'. Breaking a mirror was thought to cause the 'self' to shatter, indicating the presence of bad luck. Some people believed that burying the broken mirror pieces could prevent bad luck. In ancient times, if someone broke another person's mirror, they had to serve as a servant in that household for seven years. This was because mirrors used to be very expensive and
rare. Breaking one meant having to spend a significant amount of money to replace it. Another widely followed superstition is saying 'god bless you' when someone sneezes.
The tradition of blessing individuals who sneeze originated during a severe outbreak of disease in Europe. Those affected by the illness would have intense fits of sneezing, often resulting in death. In response, the pope implemented a law requiring people to offer a blessing to someone who sneezed. It was also expected that those who sneezed would cover their mouth with either a cloth or their hand. This measure aimed to prevent the spread of the disease and some believed it protected the person's soul as well. Sneezing "into the air" was thought to allow the soul to escape, leading to imminent death.
WEDDING SUPERSTITIONS Wedding Jewellery
The engagement ring is traditionally placed on the ring finger to symbolize its connection to the heart. This makes it a popular choice for both engagement and wedding bands. Wearing pearls during weddings also has a superstitious belief attached to it, dating back to ancient Greek traditions. It was believed that brides who wore pearls would have a happy and successful marriage. Additionally, the white wedding gown has an interesting origin story. Queen Victoria's decision to wear a white gown for her own wedding greatly influenced and popularized this trend among everyday people.
Brides traditionally wear white as a symbol of purity and virginity. The veil not only has symbolic meaning but also protects the bride from evil spirits and conceals her face until marriage to avoid potential disapproval. This tradition originated during a time when arranged marriages were common, and families feared the groom's
judgment based on the bride's appearance.
On the wedding day, certain omens are thought to bring either good or bad luck. For example, seeing a rainbow or encountering a chimney sweep is considered fortunate, while spotting a pig, hare, or lizard crossing your path or coming across an open grave, nun, or monk is regarded as unlucky. Specific days and months are also believed to be more auspicious for weddings; Monday signifies health and Tuesday signifies wealth. It is said that getting married in a year ending with an even number brings good fortune.
However, it is considered unlucky for the bride to wear her complete wedding attire before the ceremony. When it comes to wedding gifts, there is a belief that the first gift opened by the bride should be the first one she uses. Additionally, it is believed that whoever presents the third gift to be opened will soon have a baby.
Superstitions even extend into dreams. One popular saying suggests that dreams occurring out of season bring trouble without any known reason. A dream featuring a baby symbolizes fresh starts, purity, and affection. The text suggests the potential for both romantic relationships and the opportunity to form new, happy friendships.
If a woman has a dream of nursing a baby, it indicates that she will be betrayed by someone she trusts deeply. Dreaming of death indicates the arrival of a new life, while dreaming of birth foretells death. Dreaming of cats generally brings bad luck and represents deception. Cats attacking you symbolize enemies, but banishing them will lead to overcoming obstacles and achieving success and fame. If you dream of driving a vehicle, it is a warning
to be cautious with your finances and avoid gambling in the next couple of weeks. If someone else is driving, you will have financial luck. A dream of a smiling face signifies new friends, enjoyable experiences, and financial gains. Unpleasant or grotesque faces suggest potential losses. Washing your face in a dream implies the need to atone for past mistakes. Seeing the faces of strangers indicates an upcoming change of residence. Eating, making, selling or serving ice cream in a dream signifies feelings of contentment and satisfaction in life.
The dream symbolizes that through diligence and care, increased prosperity will come your way, along with stability and inner growth. It also foretells of tranquility, comfort, true love, and a happy home in your future. However, neglecting your spiritual needs is indicated by a sparse, weed-infested garden. If you dreamed of killing someone, intentionally or accidentally, it signifies a period of severe emotional stress where you must make a heroic effort to control your temper.
If you dream of standing on the shore, watching the waves foam up and break over the beach, it signifies a narrow escape from an accidental injury. However, if you are out in the ocean and hear the waves lapping against the ship's hull, it suggests setbacks in your business and a troubled domestic situation. On the other hand, sailing on a calm ocean is always a positive sign for everyone involved.
Furthermore, dreaming of an owl indicates a close brush with serious illness or death. Lastly, if you see a lone snake and feel threatened by it, it signifies the presence of a dangerous enemy who is working against you and warns
of potential harm from this adversary.
To dream of numerous snakes in a pit predicts unfavorable circumstances in matters of love or business. However, if you manage to conquer and defeat a menacing snake in your dream, it indicates that you will overcome your opponent and emerge victorious. As for spiders, all types, except tarantulas, signify good luck. The greater the size of the spider, the greater the rewards you shall receive. Spotting a spider climbing up a wall signifies the imminent fulfillment of your deepest desire. Additionally, if you observe a spider weaving a web, it implies that your income will increase due to diligent efforts. Lastly, water.
Dreaming of clear water signifies good luck and prosperity, while dreaming of muddy water indicates sadness or sorrow upon hearing about the illness or death of a familiar person. Dirty water is a warning about unscrupulous individuals who could cause your downfall. In terms of gift giving superstitions, there are numerous variations that have been passed down from one generation to another, with interpretations evolving over time. Some superstitions are tied to specific occasions, while others are more general in nature.
Various beliefs surround knives, scissors, and cash. According to one belief, receiving a knife, pair of scissors, or any sharp object as a gift is believed to signify the imminent end of the relationship between the giver and receiver. To counteract this supposed fate, it is customary for the recipient to offer a coin in exchange for the gift. In the past, people used to affix a penny onto the blade and then return it to ensure that their relationship remained secure. Likewise, presenting scissors or knives as
wedding gifts is considered unlucky since it suggests doubt about the longevity of the marriage. Superstitions also extend to cash.
In India, it is acceptable to give cash as a gift as long as the amount is an odd number like Rs. 5, Rs. 11, Rs. 51, Rs. 101, etc. On the other hand, in Japan, it is considered inappropriate to give amounts starting with the number four because it sounds like "shi" which means death in Japanese. When presenting someone with a purse, wallet, or change purse, make sure to include some money inside, even a small amount like a penny. Otherwise, the gift will bring bad luck to the recipient. Additionally, giving money as a gift assures that the recipient will always have some funds. Concerning gift wrapping in Hong Kong, it is advisable not to use blue paper as it is associated with mourning along with white.
The colour red is considered lucky in Hong Kong, while in Moroccan culture, the colors pink, violet, and yellow are avoided due to their association with death. It is advised not to give handkerchiefs as gifts, as they are used for wiping away tears and sweat, implying that the recipient will experience a lot of crying or frustration. Similarly, it is believed that giving shoes as a gift may cause the person to walk away from you. Suitcases are not specifically mentioned relating to any cultural beliefs.
According to superstition, giving someone a suitcase can result in the termination of a relationship. There exist several superstitions concerning the human body, specifically regarding hair. Hair, commonly known as the 'crowning glory,' is believed to possess great resilience. Hence, experiencing
abrupt hair loss is regarded as unlucky since it might indicate deteriorating health, loss of possessions or business downfall, or the passing away of a close relative. Additionally, certain personality traits are associated with specific hair colors - individuals with red hair are linked to having hot tempers, black and dark brown hair symbolize strength, while fair hair implies timidity.
The length of a person's life can be predicted by their hair growth patterns. In men, if hair grows low on the forehead and back above the temples, it indicates longevity. Women with a low point hairline on their foreheads, known as a 'widow's peak', are believed to live longer than their husbands. However, if curls suddenly appear on a woman's forehead, it is seen as an omen that her partner will have a short life. Different meanings are attributed to different hair textures: lank hair suggests cunning nature, curly hair signifies a good-natured and fun-loving personality, while long hair symbolizes strength and luck.
Cutting one's hair during the waning moon phase is considered unlucky because it may lead to hair loss and loss of shine. There is also a belief that cutting one's own hair tempts fate. Alongside these beliefs about hair, eye twitching is a common occurrence familiar to all.
In India, the left eye twitch is seen as a bad sign, but the right eye twitch is considered good. However, Chinese tradition reverses this belief. In Africa, lower eyelid twitching predicts upcoming sorrow. Eye twitching can be caused by stress, lack of sleep, or eye issues. As for ears, an itchy right ear indicates positive things being said about you, while an itchy left ear
means negative remarks are being made. Lastly, if you accidentally bite your tongue while eating, it implies that you have recently lied.
Having a large gap between the teeth is believed to bring luck in life, while possessing large teeth signifies physical strength. On the other hand, individuals with small and regular teeth are seen as careful and methodical in their habits. It is considered unfortunate for a child to be born with any teeth visible. Additionally, it is believed that counting one's teeth brings bad luck. If one discards a tooth and it is discovered by an animal, their new tooth is said to resemble that of the animal. The hand carries symbolic meaning, representing power and serving as an instrument for healing, justice, and blessing. Traditionally, the right hand is associated with good luck, whereas the left hand is deemed unlucky due to the belief that the Devil sat on God's left side before being banished from heaven.
The text explores the relationship between different hand characteristics and various personality traits. For instance, large and thick hands are associated with strength of character, while small and slender hands indicate a weak and timid nature. Long hands suggest an ingenious disposition, whereas short hands signify carelessness and foolishness. Rough hands are linked to rudeness, while smooth hands are connected to wit. Moreover, individuals with hairy hands are believed to enjoy luxury. A moist hand indicates an amorous disposition, while a cold hand supposedly signifies a warm heart.
In terms of superstition, it is said that if the right palm itches, the person will receive money; however, if the left palm itches, they may experience loss ('left -
lose; right - receive'). Additionally, there is a belief that two people should never wash their hands together in the same water as it will lead to a quarrel between them.
Artistic individuals often have elongated fingers, while those with short and thick fingers are seen as impulsive and foolish. A curved little finger symbolizes wealth, while the index finger (also known as the 'poison finger') should not be used for administering medication. The ring finger, also called the 'wedding' finger, is believed to have a direct connection to the heart. It is considered unlucky to trim fingernails on Friday or Sunday. Specks on nails have their own meanings: yellow signifies death, black indicates misfortune, and white suggests imminent good luck. Additionally, if a woman trims her right hand's nails using her left hand, she is said to gain an advantage in marriage. The number of X's on the palm of your right hand represents the number of children you will have. These beliefs also apply to feet.
The feet also have their own superstitions. An itching foot indicates a journey to somewhere new, while flat feet indicate a bad temper. It is considered bad luck to enter a building left foot first. If you stumble while going anywhere, it signifies that you are not welcome there. Having a second toe larger than your big toe is believed to indicate that you will have authority over your partner. Mole superstitions also exist: a mole on the right side is associated with good luck, while a mole on the left side brings bad luck. A mole on the left leg suggests a very bad temper, whereas a mole
on the arm signifies charm. A mole on the face, particularly on the chin or neck, is seen as a symbol of wealth. These are some of the superstitions observed in India.
Superstition continues to chain Indian society, persisting for so many years and creating obstacles. These superstitions are often supported by religious beliefs, but at times they exist without any factual knowledge. People unquestioningly adhere to these beliefs without logical justification. While it is true that educated individuals leading modern lifestyles often do not subscribe to these superstitions, the majority of Indians still hold onto these convictions. Here are a few enduring Indian superstitions: never leave home without consulting an astrologer.
Rahu and Ketu, two malefic planets, are waiting to cause negative outcomes for you. It is important to wait for the auspicious moment, known as shubh mahurat, according to the Hindu calendar. This applies to various events in life, including weddings, naming ceremonies, and housewarming rituals. Before arranging marriages for your children, it is advisable to consult a horoscope and proceed only if their virtues and gunas align perfectly. Spotting an elephant during a journey is considered fortunate, as it symbolizes success with the blessings of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. To bring good luck for the day, it is believed to be auspicious to look at the face of one's mother or a picture of a deity upon waking up in the morning. However, asking someone "where are you going?" as they leave the house will nullify its purpose. The howling of a dog at night is considered eerie and is believed to foretell an impending death. When leaving home, encountering a bride, a
Brahmin, or a religious idol is considered auspicious. Conversely, coming across a widow or a woman unable to conceive is seen as unlucky. The fortunes or misfortunes that occur in a new bride's new family during the first year of marriage are believed to determine her fate. When entering her new home, she steps in with her right foot first. Trees such as coconut tree, Ashoka tree, and Banyan tree hold sacred significance. Due to concerns about potential possession by spirits or ghosts, pregnant women are advised not to travel alone at night or enter uninhabited homes.
It is advised that individuals engage in reading religious books and watching inspiring movies to foster the development of good morals in children. Hiccups are believed to be a sign that someone is thinking of you, while an itchy eye is often interpreted as a reference to someone speaking ill of you or your feelings of jealousy towards others. It is considered ineffective to inquire about someone's destination as they are leaving the house, as the question will not serve its intended purpose. If you sneeze once after making a statement, it is regarded as an indication of truthfulness. Similarly, if a lizard makes a sound when you are speaking, it signifies the truthfulness of your statement.
Barber shops traditionally remain closed on Tuesdays, as hair cutting is not practiced on that particular day. Nails should not be trimmed at night due to the fear of malevolent spirits.
Never wash the front courtyard immediately after someone leaves the house.
Open the front door during dusk, so that Lakshmi (fortune) enters the house.
Never sweep the house during night time or Lakshmi
(fortune) will not enter your house.
Cutting nails, hair-cutting, shaving or stitching cloth after sun set is a bad practice. (Obviously because of no electricity during old times, doing these in the dark could be dangerous, but it is still believed to be a bad practice).
Taking a teaspoon of curd with little sugar before an exam will bring good luck.
Twitching of the eye is highly inauspicious.
An eclipse occurs when Rahu and Ketu swallow the sun, and people avoid eating anything, and go and take a dip in rivers after it is over. When there is a birth or death in the family, the members are unclean, and do not go to the temple till the stipulated period is over. These colorful customs, regardless of their absurdity, keep the religious individuals occupied and provide amusement for the irreverent ones.

Ultimately, these superstitions are common knowledge and while some may seem foolish or eerie, others can be entertaining; however, their validity remains uncertain.
Even individuals who are educated and knowledgeable
may still retain superstitions. Each of us possesses our own personal beliefs in lucky colors, numbers, objects, or people. Despite attempting to refute them and valuing our rationality, these small convictions hold significance for us. Superstitions have been present throughout human history and will persist indefinitely.
