Sentencing individuals to serve jail terms because of minor offences and misdemeanors such as failing to pay child support is likely to increase the number inmates in the prison thereby raising maintenance cost and at the same time causing overcrowding (Stinchcomb, 2011). As a jail administrator in the county, I would advise the judge who has decided to sentence individuals who have failed to pay child support to use other jail alternative program that will make these people to be compliant.

Some of the alternatives he can use include directing the offenders to be paying the agreed amount of money to the respective people through legal channels. For instance, the individual can be directed to be paying the money through certain office agreed by both parties failure to which he or she can be arrested and charged with contempt of court. As a result, this will ensure that the individual become compliant and at the same time reduce the costs that are incurred to maintain the him or her in prison. Furth

ermore, it will also help in reducing overcrowding which would cause problems such as disease outbreak that could make prison to incur medical expenses.

The other alternative that I would advise the judge to use to convict the offenders who have refused to pay child support is the intermittent sentence. In this case, the offenders will be required to be in jail only for certain days of the week but not throughout (Stinchcomb, 2011). This will help in reducing the cost that would be incurred to hold these prisoners for the extra days they will be out of jail. However, for the convicts to be allowed to get intermittent service, they ought not to have a criminal record which shows that they failed to comply with probations. Furthermore, intermittent sentence will also enable the convicts to be going for job on the days they are free so as to be able to pay the child support.
