Despite his diligence in learning, he faced rejection solely on the basis of his status. In the end, Vincent was obliged to take on the role of a janitor in order to earn a living.

The society is unjust because Invalids lack opportunities to succeed due to the belief that they are not as capable as Valids. In his determination to prove this belief wrong, Vincent sought out a Gene Broker who introduced him to Jerome Morrow, a Valid with a broken back. Vincent transformed his appearance by changing the color of his eyes with contacts and growing his bones to appear taller. With Jerome's help, Vincent acquired fake fingertips and urine pouches containing Jerome's Valid blood and urine. To maintain his disguise, Vincent scrubbed himself every morning to remove any loose skin and hair.

Despite not being the murderer of the mission director, Vincent inadvertently left an eyelash at the crime scene. The detectives in charge immediately assumed it was the Invalid Vincent, who had disguised himself as Jerome to avoid detection. When Vincent learned that he was a suspect, he lost faith in his disguise and threatened to reveal himself. However, Jerome urged him to stay strong and continue his ruse. Ultimately, Vincent's loss of hope disappointed Jerome, who had placed his own life in Vincent's hands. This lack of hope is a common theme in Gattaca, where dreams are absent from society.

Only a few characters in the movie possess a particular quality, such as Vincent, Irene, and Jerome. Vincent stands out as he strives to achieve his dream of traveling to outer space and maximizing his potential. Irene also shares this ability to dream, often observing shuttles departing towards the sky. Contrarily, Jerome differs from both Vincent and Irene as he does not aspire to benefit himself. Rather, he dreams of providing someone else with the opportunity to pursue their aspiration, which happens to be Vincent's dream of space exploration.
