Science can be utilized in such a way that it may cause individual suffering in the name of progress especially if it is used in the wrong manner.
This is very true and I can only strongly agree with it.To prove this statement, let us take for instance, the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, wherein four hundred African American sharecroppers who are mostly poor and uneducated become a part of a study on the treatment and natural history of syphilis (National.., 2005).
This study has been conducted without due care to its subjects (National.., 2005). First of all, the individuals enrolled in the aforementioned study are not given the opportunity to hand over their informed consent (National.., 2005).
Second, the participants for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study are also denied of their rights to know what their diagnoses are (National.., 2005). Third, they are deceived by t
...he clinician’s statement that they have bad blood and that they could receive free treatment, free meals and burial insurance as well (National.., 2005).
Fourth, they are deprived of penicillin, which then is a standard treatment for syphilis (National.., 2005). Fifth, the participants, as well as, their loved ones are subjected to needless pain and suffering as a result of the United States Public Health Service trying to study more about syphilis and justifying treatment programs for the blacks (National., 2005). The aforementioned only shows that because of progress for science, there are some scientists who are willing to put their subjects in harm’s way (Nationa., 2005).
Another example is on the case of Stem Cells, specifically on the embryonic ones since it is morally disagreeable (Family.., n.d.).
This is simply because the human embryo must be damaged
or shattered to be able to get its stem cells (Family.., n.d.).
“We know that the human embryo is a human being because it possesses an internal code for self-actualization and is an organism with an independent and inherent teleology or goal-directedness to develop into an adult, and is physiologically alive and genetically human” (Family.., n.d.).
It is very clear that science may be abused.
