Rhinoceros family has faced threats in different countries. Their number has continued to decrease with time due to increased demand for rhino’s horn by poachers. The situation has proved extreme after the reports from world conservation society indicated that more than five thousand Rhinos have been killed in the African continent alone, since 2008. These are devastating reports, and reveal the extent at which the illegal practice has turned out to be catastrophic. Horns have proved to be highly profitable to poachers since they are highly paid. Different countries have tried to implement measures and strategies to curb the situation but in vain.
The endangered rhinos are the species that are likely to die before they even near the completion of their lifespan. The expected life span of a rhino is approximate, 40-50 years but barely an
...y of these animals live to see their natural cause of death since they are poached when they are still young. Many rhinos are killed before they have a real existence. Usually, the reason behind these species being threatened is as a result of poaching. Despite the decreasing number of rhinos, poachers are still hunting the rhinos for their horns. The horns are used for making jewelry and ornaments which are very expensive in price thus good returns. Moreover, it is believed that they are used to change contaminated stuff to harmless substances. Besides, horns are used to make traditional medicines which are believed to heal different disorders and ailments.
Remedies to curb the endangered rhinos have been put into place to stop their extinct. For instance, trade in rhino’s horns has been banned though they are still being sold illegall
for high prices. Measures have been put in place to curb the situation by imposing high fines and penalties for personnel involved in this menace. Also, the governments have reserved private parks for the remaining rhinos. Many parks have been reserved in different parts of the country for security purposes of the rhinos. The parks are electrically fenced to shun poachers from reaching the rhinos. The fencing is strategically placed to prevent the rhinos from being electrocuted. Moreover, armed guards have been deployed in these private parks to guard the rhinos. As the rhinos go in search of water and food, the guards follow them fully armed with their rifles ready to attack. Tragically, armed guards have been killed in the long run by poachers only to get the rhinos horn.
This, in turn, has forced the government to deploy more guards in these parks. However, special training on how to deal with poachers has been put into place. Guards are trained new tactics each day for them to know how to deal with poachers. Additionally, rhino specialists are campaigning for a dehorning process for the remaining rhinos. They are advocating it after every six years for all rhinos. This in return will act as a source of revenue for the government and will protect the remaining species of the rhinoceros family. Tragically, the dehorning process has proved to be difficult and risky thus more cost to train special personnel for this job. Despite all these measures being put into place, poachers are still hunting the few remaining rhinos for their horns.
The policies put in place to preserve rhinos have not worked. For instance, a ban
on horns trade has increased the price of rhino horns thus making poaching more profitable. Moreover, horns are believed to make traditional medicine thus it is hard for people to stop buying this medicine. This in return will advocate for more poaching to get the medicine needed to cure different ailments. In conclusion, the best remedy to be put in place is to incorporate dehorning process. The process will be beneficial to the government since the horns will bring back good returns regarding revenue.
