Purring monkey among hundreds of new animals found in Amazon rainforest news Essay Example
At least 441 previously unknown animals and plants, including a monkey that produces a sound similar to a cat's purr, were discovered in the Amazon rainforest during a four-year timeframe.
Callicebus caquentensis, a new species of titi monkey identified by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has been deemed "remarkable" and was discovered between 2010 and 2013 in Colombia. Noted for its purring when content, scientist Thomas Defler and his team were among those who sighted the monkey. The discovery adds to the already known 20 species of titi monkey in the Amazon Basin, which remains largely unexplored despite it being the world's largest rainforest covering one-third of South America. This particular mammal is the sole new species found during a four-year study of the Amazon.
The researchers discovered a diverse range of organisms in the Amazon rainforest, including 258 plant species
..., 84 types of fish, 58 amphibian varieties, and 18 kinds of birds. They also found many insects and invertebrates as well as intriguing creatures like a timid lizard with "war paint" adornments, a vegetarian piranha that consumes underwater vegetation, and a tiny frog the size of a thimble. These species are natural treasures that require preservation to protect their home in the rainforest. Claudio Maretti, Leader of the Living Amazon Initiative at WWF highlighted the importance of safeguarding the rainforest from deforestation and dam development. Damian Fleming, head of programmes for the Amazon at WWF UK recognized the remarkable biodiversity but warned that tourism and deforestation threaten this unique ecosystem. He urged an increase in sustainable management efforts to conserve this habitat because many newly-discovered species inhabit only small parts of it. Currently, logging agricultur
and farming are causing rapid destruction with three soccer field-sized sections lost every minute; consequently placing some species such as red-bearded Caqueta titi on critically endangered lists with only known ranges covering just sixty miles.WWF has launched the Sky Rainforest Rescue program with the aim of preserving one billion trees in the Brazilian state of Acre. The initiative seeks to make these trees more valuable when left standing rather than being cut down.
