At least 441 previously unknown animals and plants, including a monkey that produces a sound similar to a cat's purr, were discovered in the Amazon rainforest during a four-year timeframe.

Callicebus caquentensis, a new species of titi monkey identified by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has been deemed "remarkable" and was discovered between 2010 and 2013 in Colombia. Noted for its purring when content, scientist Thomas Defler and his team were among those who sighted the monkey. The discovery adds to the already known 20 species of titi monkey in the Amazon Basin, which remains largely unexplored despite it being the world's largest rainforest covering one-third of South America. This particular mammal is the sole new species found during a four-year study of the Amazon.

Damian Fleming, head of programmes for the Amazon at WWF UK recognized the remarkable biodiversity but warned that tourism and deforestation threaten this unique ecosystem.
