The scientific method is employed, rejecting the concept of unchanging and universal absolute facts. Education focuses on change instead of Perennials and Fundamentalism (Wilma, 2011, p. 344). Progressivism challenges extreme formalism and traditional education by advocating interdisciplinary teaching and avoiding excessive emphasis on rote memorization. The goal is to foster critical thinking about ideas that hold personal importance to students (Cohn, 2008).
The term "progressive" was employed to distinguish contemporary education from the conventional 19th-century curriculum, which emphasized classical preparation for university and was shaped by socioeconomic status. Conversely, progressive education is founded on present experiences. Personally, I concur with the majority of the Progressive philosophy since I believe that providing vocational subjects as elective courses in high school can significantly advantage specific students. For example, if a student chooses not
...to pursue higher education, they can depend on the skills acquired in classes like welding, sewing, or medical assisting that they undertook in high school.
Progressives argue that the classroom should mirror society, wherein individuals face repercussions for illegal activities. Conversely, I advocate for instilling discipline and enforcing accountability among students. To promote transparency, I will visibly present rules in my classroom and communicate my expectations on a daily basis. At the beginning of the academic year, students will receive comprehensive information regarding their responsibilities. In cases where a rule is violated or disruptive behavior occurs, it will be imperative for students to acknowledge their misconduct and provide an explanation for its inappropriate nature.
If the students persist in displaying unwanted behavior, behavior contracts will be implemented between them and myself. They must adhere to the terms of these contracts. If the behavio
is not effectively addressed by the contract, a meeting with parents may be necessary. Additionally, I am open to involving my students in determining appropriate disciplinary measures. The Progressive philosophy highlights adaptability and granting students some autonomy in managing their own classroom. Therefore, at the beginning of the school year, the classroom may seem somewhat empty as I collaborate with my students to establish rules and procedures. This approach encourages a sense of ownership among students for their new learning environment.
The idea is to have one bulletin board displaying a calendar, while the other one remains empty for students to decorate. Instead of assigning seats, students will have the freedom to choose where they want to sit each day. However, if any behavioral issues arise, seat assignments may be necessary. The objective is to establish a classroom atmosphere where students feel a sense of ownership and pride in being part of our learning community. Over time, teachers have developed a teacher-centered approach known as Progressivism.
This is a blend of conventional and innovative teaching techniques. In the classroom, teachers usually spend more than five hours daily with students who possess diverse interests, motivations, and prior knowledge. Teachers are responsible for managing disciplinary matters, delivering mandated curriculum, keeping students interested in the subject matter and skills, adjusting instruction to cater to individual needs, and showcasing acceptable performance. Moreover, due to budget reductions, staffing limitations, and a lack of qualified teachers, classroom sizes are expanding.
According to a study conducted by Cubans (2009), teachers have established schools to meet the increasing societal need for widespread education. However, policy elites tend to overlook the fact that most
teachers adopt a moderate teaching approach. Experienced teachers have discovered through personal experimentation that no single teaching method can consistently produce desired results for all students (p. 30). Consequently, regressive education prioritizes the needs of each child and celebrates diversity.
In my perspective, involving my students in decision-making and giving them a voice will improve the classroom experience for both me and them. I also recognize the significance of Progressivism as it teaches children effective learning methods and instills strong moral principles. By establishing a progressive learning environment, students engage in shaping the curriculum, generating inquiries, finding solutions, problem-solving to explore various possibilities, and assessing their own accomplishments.
