Personal values, such as honesty, reliability, and trust, define an individual's principles and guide their interactions with the world and others. These convictions determine what is important and desirable to a person. They can range from beliefs like hard work and punctuality to psychological values like self-reliance, concern for others, and harmony of purpose.
Parents strive to raise their children as good citizens by instilling values such as honesty, integrity, loyalty, faith, fairness, family equality responsibility accountability discipline. They teach that treating others with respect and being honest and loyal are crucial aspects of interacting with others.
My mother became a mother while still in high school. During my early years, my grandparents provided significant support so that she could continue her educat
...ion while providing a decent life for both of us. Despite the unplanned nature of her pregnancy with me, my mother accepted responsibility for her actions and chose to keep me. She dedicated herself to giving me a fulfilling life filled with abundant opportunities. Her diligent efforts became my initial lesson in personal values. The majority of these values were instilled in me through the actions of my mother and grandparents. My mother led by example instead of simply telling me the values I should possess.
She drew inspiration from her parents and showed the importance of faith by taking me to church with my grandparents. Even though my grandparents moved away after retiring, they made sure we all gathered for holidays and made me feel special on my birthday. The love and values demonstrated by my family have shaped who I am today and guide me towards becoming the woman I aspire to be. Despite
having good examples, I have still made mistakes that have been crucial in shaping my personal values and helping me make responsible decisions aligned with those values.
I strongly believe in clients' potential to overcome challenges and am dedicated to assisting them in their healing process. However, it is vital for clients to acknowledge their own actions and take responsibility for them. As a human service professional, I understand that ethical dilemmas may arise that conflict with my personal beliefs and affect my professional judgment. Nevertheless, it is essential for me to promptly report any client expressing intentions of self-harm or harm towards others.
This involves reaching out to the individual as well as contacting the appropriate authorities to ensure everyone's safety. When faced with a client threatening self-harm, I would guide them towards healthier coping mechanisms for managing their emotions. It is important to convey that thoughts of suicide are not a permanent solution but can be related to temporary problems. In my role, I will take necessary steps to protect the well-being of clients and inform those at risk. Statement eight of the Ethical standards of Human service professionals presents challenges by stating that clients have the right to accept or decline services. As a Family therapist, it troubles me personally when clients refuse beneficial services. While I must respect their decision, knowing that assistance is available but not accepted raises difficulties for me. The ethical standards for human service professionals provide guidance on making ethical and professional decisions in this field for both professionals and educators alike.
These guidelines aim to assist professionals and educators in navigating ethical dilemmas within human services. It is important
to note that these guidelines are not legal documents; rather, they offer support for addressing ethical conduct. There are two main sections within these ethical standards: responsibilities of human service professionals (considering clients, communities and society, professional colleagues, the profession itself, employers, and oneself) and standards for human service educators in higher learning institutions. This section explains the responsibilities of human service educators towards their students. Lying and deception are commonly used for different purposes. Often, people lie to avoid trouble with authorities or employers. Detecting lies can be difficult as it is not always easy to tell when someone is being dishonest. Polygraphs, also known as "lie detectors," are instruments that monitor deceptive behavior. However, they can only detect deceptive behavior. Polygraph instruments combine medical devices to monitor changes in heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and electro-dermal activity (sweatiness) during questioning and compare them to normal levels. These fluctuations can indicate deception, but their interpretation is subjective. Personally, I disagree with using polygraph tests because an honest person may appear deceptive due to test-induced nervousness while a dishonest person may seem truthful due to their lying abilities. Psychologists have acted as expert witnesses in court since the Jenkins v.United States case where they assess individuals for various reasons such as competency, sanity, violence risk, substance abuse parental fitness trauma child custody and workplace discrimination effects. The improper use of psychological tests in forensic settings can result in severe consequences for both the evaluated individual and the criminal justice process. Mishandling or misinterpreting test data can have a significant impact on court proceedings and the defendant's life, while also harming psychologists' reputation and the entire psychological
community. Therefore, psychologists working in forensics must maintain a high level of competence to ensure that their recommendations to the court do not negatively affect others' lives. It is crucial for psychologists to only provide services within their areas of expertise, with proper qualifications and training. To prevent errors, psychologists who utilize psychological testing should stay updated on relevant literature and research regarding these tests.
Human service professionals play a vital role in providing essential assistance to those who are most in need. They rely on ethical standards and personal values as they deliver appropriate support to their clients.
