This is the newest edition of a successful curriculum model that is issue-based and it is established by American Chemical Society at the college level to gather for non-science majors. Chemistry in Context 8th Edition provides students with learning about chemistry in context of their own lives and gives a survey of important issues facing the science together with the world. The activities are integrated to enable the students get an informed understanding of topics including global warming, air quality, acid rain, genetic engineering and alternative fuels (Middlecamp, 5).
When presenting chemistry it should be broader as it is a course that is more of survey that consists of minimum depth that is usually needed to get concepts. Emphasis is always put on the importance of the concepts learned in everyday life. Quality of air we breathe is one of the
...together with water we drink give a representation of the broader subjects (Middlecamp, 9). It can be very challenging to balance between basic information that is needed in understanding the concepts presented and the minimum skills for quantitative analysis to make full appreciation of the importance of the subject matter.
Chemistry without math can be so attractive to many people that may lead to higher enrollment, but the reality is that the amount of problem solving involved and critical thinking in the chemistry course cannot be sacrificed at all. The learning in the topic overwhelms non-science majors at the college level. The topics in the book are simplified and the discussions are organized neatly in a systematic way.
The simplicity enables students to understand chemistry in the context of their own lives by making survey for significan
issues that face the world for example global warming, acid rain and alternative fuels. The interesting aspect of chapters is the combination of environmental issues together with chemistry. Sustainability is the central topic of the environmental textbook (Middlecamp, 13). The role of chemistry to make a sustainable environment is critically analyzed in different angles. Chemistry is employed to protect the environment by avoiding irresponsible use of chemicals that are hazardous. Reality of conflicts is presented that exists between the need for jobs and the economics experienced in a cleaner world.
The principles of environmental sciences provide environmental themes that are essential and offer students a lot of opportunities to exercise scientific thinking and active learning. Scientists are generally skeptical because most of them are cautious in accepting a possible explanation that has no substantial evidence. The person presenting the explanation must provide a lot of evidence for the scientist to accept it. Scientists are also skeptical because they cannot provide a proof for something to be true. Tests require replication simply because it repeats tests which may make them more accurate. The more the test is repeated will make it more familiar thus making it to produce more accurate results (Middlecamp, 16).
Humans have occupied two worlds: one that consist of human society and the technology and the other one that consists of nature. The environmental science helps us to understand the worlds in which we inhabit and the roles we play in them. The features that are amazing about our planet can be self-sustaining ecological systems that make life a possibility where the rich diversity of life make part of it and generate dependence on those
ecological processes. Despite all the problems that are faced the earth is beautiful and wonderfully bountiful.
