The motivations of Spanish, French, and English explorers varied, but in certain aspects, they overlapped. One shared goal among all three was to discover the Northwest Passage, a direct and efficient route believed to lead to the wealthy Orient, renowned for its spices, silk, and prosperity. Another common objective was to acquire new territories and expand their empires. The Spanish explorers were particularly interested in finding mineral riches, specifically seeking El Dorado, the legendary City of Gold. Additionally, they aimed to propagate Christianity.

France and England had different goals in North America. France wanted to expand Christianity and find a new water route to the East, while England aimed to colonize as much of the Americas as they could, thus expanding their empire. Since Christopher Columbus's arrival in 1492, the Spanish Empire has consistently expanded its territories. This expansion included the establishment of small settlements in different regions such as the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, most of South America, and the present-day Southwestern United States. Furthermore, the empire also reached parts of North America's Pacific and Caribbean coasts before ultimately reaching Alaska[1].

During the early 19th century, independence movements arose in Spanish territories in America, resulting in Spain's loss of its colonies throughout North, Central, and South America by 1825. The United States then gained control over Cuba and Puerto Rico after the Spanish-American War in 1898, effectively terminating Spanish dominance in the Americas. Throughout history, the Spanish established settlements in various regions of America.
