"Cuckoo" Hokey-pokey
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a novel about the misdiagnosis of mental disorders. McCarthy resides in the ward primarily to reap its benefits and evade confronting reality.
Even though McCarthy knows that others will still consider him mentally ill, as a newcomer to the ward, he quickly realizes that his condition is not as severe as other patients. Upon briefly observing the day room, he immediately understands that he belongs to the Acute side instead of the Chronic side. However, McCarthy not only constantly gets mistaken for a typical insane patient but also faces misunderstandings about his character. Surprisingly, most patients in the ward see McCarth
...y as the embodiment of insanity and rely on him as a guiding figure. To establish McCarthy's sanity at the beginning of the novel, Chief makes one significant observation: "However, this is not how Public Relation laughs; his laughter is unrestrained and boisterous, emanating from his wide grin and echoing throughout the ward."
The decision to admit McCarthy to the ward on the assumption of his insanity was not wise for Big Nurse. What she didn't know was that McCarthy was fully capable. He not only recognized his own sanity but also helped other patients in the ward realize that they were not alone in their self-consciousness. McCarthy became the source of sanity for all the patients.
