The focus of this assignment is exercise physiology in touch football and my performance as a centre player. Touch football is a variation of Rugby League where opponents must tag or touch each other to halt progress. Exercise physiology involves studying how the human body functions during different exercise conditions. In a game of touch football, we rely on different energy systems to meet our energy needs.
When discussing fatigue and training programs, the text will make predictions to assess performance. Touch football consists of three positions: centre, link, and wing, each with specific demands on the three energy systems (Creatine Phosphate, Lactic Acid, and Aerobic). The most important energy system for touch football is the Lactic Acid (LA) system. When muscles contract forcefully, the body produces more LA than it needs.

...emands of the centre position in the game create waste in the body, leading to sore muscles and cramps. The centre position requires prolonged physical effort throughout the game, which is not suitable for the creatine phosphate system. If used, it would cause lactic acid build up and make prolonged muscular activity unbearable. To assess fitness levels, fitness testing was conducted before and after implementing training plans within the class. This allowed for the identification of weaknesses in different fitness components.
A variety of tests were conducted in class to identify the improvements needed in playing the centre position. The results highlighted a below average response to the beep test, which tested for endurance. Endurance is one of the most important physical characteristics required for the centre position. Additionally, the 50m sprint test revealed a lack of speed required for
the position. To improve these fitness components, a training program will be implemented that focuses on training the specific energy systems over a 5-week course. The program includes a circuit program, warm-up, various exercises, and a warm-down. The individual heart rate graph will be analyzed and the testing results from before and after the training program will be compared. In touch football, an improved Lactic Acid system would assist in quicker play of the ball, attack, defense, and overall gameplay. Certain rule changes in touch football, such as increasing the number of rucks from 5 to 7, could also influence player fatigue and various aspects of the game.
To increase demand on the Lactic Acid system and require short bursts of energy, players need to ruck the ball and run at the defensive line. This also puts pressure on all players due to increased defence work. If touch were played with 5 players instead of 6, it would affect game play, fatigue, and energy system usage. With fewer players doing more work, the demands on the aerobic system increase and fatigue sets in earlier. As a result, there would be more attacking options and a need for quick substitutions.
By incorporating a trained lactic acid system, the centre position can be optimized for quicker ball rucking and increased opportunities for teammates to score. Modifying the training program to focus on speed and agility will further enhance the centre position. Additionally, this training approach will improve the players' aerobic system, minimizing the impact of fatigue and allowing their bodies to adapt more easily to energy requirements. on the overall performance of players in a game of touch, efficiently preparing their bodies to meet energy demands.
