Understanding the meaning and significance of 2 Samuel 7:8-19 requires an understanding of the preceding chapters. It all starts with the death of Saul and Jonathan.
Saul, the reigning king of Israel and father of Jonathan who was David's closest companion, created a complex emotional situation for David when they perished at Mt. Gilboa. Despite Saul's attempts to murder David out of envy for his popularity, David managed to elude him. According to God's prophecy in 1 Samuel 16, David anticipated that Saul's death would lead to his own ascent to the throne.
Whilst he was mourning the passing of his closest friend, Jonathan, Saul's and Jonathan's deaths paved the way for God's plan to come to fruition; David subsequently journeyed to Hebron and was appointed as King over Judah. Concurrently, Abner, the general of Saul, declared Saul's son Ishobosheth ruler over Israel

The duration of the war that ensued was roughly two years, resulting in the deaths of Abner and Ishobosheth. David was ultimately crowned king. Additionally, the transfer of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem is significant to this passage. By being relocated to Jerusalem, Israelite worship became centralized in that city.
David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem commenced celebration through dancing and showing adoration towards God. Albeit, David’s spouse was displeased at his dancing, however he reprimanded her and cited his reason for exalting God due to the numerous blessings He bestowed upon him. Having authority over the entire nation and experiencing no adversity during that time, David intended to construct a temple to contain the Ark.
After Nathan, a prophet, initially urged David to construct the temple, God communicated with Nathan and instructed
him to inform David that one of his future offspring would oversee the project. God had a more grandiose plan for David, which is disclosed in 2 Samuel 7:8-19 as the Davidic Covenant, wherein God made numerous commitments to David.
His promise was to bless David, his family and his people, which he assured.
