"Whatever Works" is a comedy film set in New York, made in 2009 and directed and written by Woody Allen. The main character, Boris Yelnikoff, played by Larry David, is a chess teacher who is divorced and has an eccentric lifestyle. He used to be a professor at Columbia University."
Avoiding social interactions as much as he could, he expressed his frustrations to anyone who would lend an ear: mainly his small circle of friends, his audience, and the students he taught chess. After his initial marriage ended, he made a suicide attempt by leaping out of a window but was fortunately rescued by a canopy. Over time, he came across several other women who profoundly disturbed his life. Eventually, he discovered contentment in his profession. In this extraordinary movie, Woody Allen skillfully creates an enchanting a
...mbiance infused with understated yet black comedy.
Boris' remarks and tirades are so bleak that I initially couldn't decide whether to chuckle or fall into a deep depression. The plot, characters, and themes explored may seem outdated, but I believe that subjects such as religion, love, human nature, and societal behavior remain timeless and even more captivating when presented in the backdrop of New York with Allen's unpredictable dark humor. Honestly, this film is not suitable for young children because they may be disturbed by the radical perspective of the protagonist. However, you can extract specific scenes to depict American life and educate them about the culture and society prevalent in major American cities. Furthermore, they could engage in a fill-in-the-gap exercise while listening to a dialogue.
