Case managers play a very important role in today’s society. Case managers work with many different populations and many different ages for many different reasons. Case managers help with direct personal support, crisis intervention, and short-term treatment intervention and help clients work through their problems to become a better person. Direct personal support is very important. Developing a personal relationship with the client is very important. The client must be able to trust the case manager in order to open up and to work towards positive improvements.

The client must feel that the case manager truly does care for the client, and the case manager must make the client comfortable. There are some barriers to the development of the relationship, such as different views or beliefs

, trust issues, or bad experiences with previous helping professions. The client may also not be a good truth teller, and if the case manager goes at that wrong, it could upset the client. The client may have had a bad experience with someone in the past, which directly puts more pressure on the case manager.

If the case manager and the client have different views or opinions on things, the client may feel that the case manager may be doing things based on their own belief rather than the clients, or that the case manager is being biased due to their views or beliefs. This could hinder the development of the relationship. Crisis intervention is important with a client. Assessing the client immediately is the first step. Knowing how serious the potential crisis can be is a key element in knowing how to proceed. Depending

on the crisis at hand, there are many different ways to work a client through the crisis.

If there are behaviors to watch for, such as self-abusive behavior, or striking out towards others, then more physical action needs to be taken, whereas if it becomes a verbal yelling, then more verbal action is needed. The case manager needs to know what the client is capable of and what the normal behaviors are for the client. Then the case manager needs to know what the client has been capable of doing in the past to be prepared. Setting up a crisis intervention plan for different behaviors is a wise idea.

The case manager should be able to talk to the client in a calm voice and try to talk hem down from their anger, sadness, or whatever seems to be the issue. There usually are signs leading to the bigger problems, so the case manager should be able to see these signs and work the client into another direction. Short-term treatment intervention is great for clients. Finding out what the client wants to accomplish is the first step. The case manager must be able to get the client to break things down so the case manager knows just what the client wants. Setting short-term treatment plans to help them accomplish long-term goals helps the client to see their accomplishment, but not feel overwhelmed by the goal.

These goals work more when the client is more aware of their surroundings and what they want to accomplish. People with long-term mental illnesses may not benefit as well from these plans. The case manager’s role in

the referral process is to help the client see what the company offers, and help the client to understand what the company does, and make sure the client feels comfortable being there. If the case manager feels that the client will not be a good fit then the case manager will refer the client to somewhere else, making sure the client will be helped.

If the case manager feels the client will be a good fit, it is up to the case manager to engage the client in conversation. The case manager may ask what the client expects of the case manager and of himself, work with the client on an individual level, making them feel unique, attempt to make a personal connection and recognize negative feelings. Making the client feel comfortable will help the client open up. Being a positive enabler will help the client open up and respect you and feel more comfortable. There will be trust that will start to develop.

When a case manager becomes a positive enabler, this helps the client’s self-confidence and self-esteem boost to a higher level. A teacher helps clients see their potential and to learn more about themselves and others. A teacher can help the client learn other things on their learning level, which will help the clients self-confidence rise also. A mediator does the same in disputes between clients and community services. A mediator is there to help the client get the services they need, and they fight for their rights. When a case manager acts on behalf of a client who is unable or unwilling to act on their own behalf, it

is called advocacy.

This is appropriate when the client is being mistreated, or their services are not being made due to others lack of control. Being an advocacy to the clients is a must in these situations or else the client may begin to be mistreated. It is not needed when the client is making their own decisions as long as it does not hurt them. If a client refuses treatment, the case manager must first find out why and if it is because of an error than they may step in. If they refuse treatment due to an inappropriate referral then advocacy is not needed. A case manager has a role of being a service coordinator.

There are many things to do in the community and a case manager may help set the client up with some services in the community. A case manager’s role will be to figure out what the client likes to do, does not like to do and refer the client to different places to look at. There are day programs that take the clients into the community, or help them find a job, or have them doing piecework for money. There are many different services that are offered in the community and the case manager can help the client find some that fits his wants and needs.

It may be hard to follow up and track a past client. The joy is being able to know what happened to the client, but it may also be painful too. Not all clients move forward to a better place. Sometimes it may be hard because different companies have

different guidelines and if you are not family with the proof, then you do not need to know any information about the person. Some people are nice to share the information with you, but many places have laws set in place that keep the clients rights strict.
