They pack like sardines into smoky rooms after waiting in block-long lines, just to be seen in the adult playgrounds for the chic and pretenders to the throne. One night of fool-hearty revelry often leads to buyer’s remorse after a week’s wages have been expended on opulent mixologist’s concoctions. From Soho to Sin City…nightlife calls with a shrill squeal, almost inaudible through the techno and laser display of today’s warehouse venues.

Nightlife can be educational and empowering if one chooses to partake in the sort of after dark activities in the realm of evocation of the human spirit. Poetry readings, theatre, independent film showings and art openings are all forms of night life that play well to the higher echelon of some burgs. Those who build the box prefer to be entertained. Those who live in the box often like to be the entertainment; this is one general belief that has arisen from concerted observation of the night crawlers in their natural habitat.

Many blue-collar workers delight in karaoke where anyone can be a star for the sum total of three minutes. Likewise, many famous theatres are located around ritzy addresses as many professionals that must be on at work prefer to spend their leisure moments being off and impressed by those who hone the artistic crafts. They sit, waiting to be impressed like a king and royal court, amused by the jugglers and jesters. The advent of the internet has provided unparalleled access to the full scope of global nightlife offerings.

With a few keystrokes one can find out what’s happening in nearly any city or neighborhood. When traveling, those who are unfamiliar with an area may even have access to maps and menus to prepare for the trek ahead. Theatre tickets may be obtained via websites, along with reviews on plays and cuisine in the local eateries. This unbridled reach has made nightlife more popular and easier to obtain than in the years of word of mouth

and thumbing through the yellow pages. Cinemas are all the rage in many towns that may still be labeled “dry” or controlled by the morality police.

In these locales movies rule the night and pack in the patrons with surround sound and clear imagery. Teens set their social calendar around the newest release of the slasher films and love stories that grace the silver screens where popcorn and four dollar candies still rule. Some members of the temperance generation gravitate towards wholesome forms of nightlife that include rotary functions and church gatherings. Although these affiliations may not seem as tempting to some, there are Chasid folks who relish in meeting for a pot luck religious social or playing bingo for charity.

This form of nightlife is very important for the continued sense of community. Parent teacher associations and substance recovery groups can be valuable nightlife resources that many may overlook when thinking of interesting options to fill a dance-card. Every activity has its valid place in the patchwork quilt that comprises options of entertainment for one’s spare evening hours. Traditionally, the concept of nightlife has had an edgy connotation. It usually alluded to activities that may not be available or tolerated in daylight hours.

Cities like New Orleans and Las Vegas have managed to convert the nightlife into an industry that rakes in the cash and the tourists. These cities are joining the likes of Amsterdam in providing round-the-clock vices that are only found after dark in most regions. The trend of French Quarter bars staying open 24/7 has made the nightlife have no bounds. When lights are dimmed and liquor flows,

one may lose track of time and begin their nightlife excursion in mid-day. This new evolution of the extension of nightlife has been in the works for years from Rio to Vegas, where clocks are scarce and the show is always on.

The 1800’s were a time of immense change in the history of the United States. This era brought with it the popularity of the red light district and the talk of raunchy escapades and naughty nightlife. Many locations across the country began to see red lights burning in the windows, signifying that ladies of the evening were open for business. The neighborhood of New Orleans coined Storyville was just one example of the growing popularity of this adult entertainment in full swing as the 1900’s approached. Nightlife was all the talk during the age of prohibition.

The speakeasies were where the action was in places like Chicago where jazz music and exotic ladies were on the menu along with bootlegged whiskey. It was during this time period that the masses really came to view nightlife as something that the heathens gravitated towards. A large segment of the population viewed nightlife as something that blended classes and races through the consumption of wine and moonshine. Some felt that these victims of the bottle were losing their respective ways in dance and decadence. This was when the neutral term of nightlife was given a tarnished label.

The truth of the matter is that nightlife is really just any activity that happens in the evening hours. It is usually applied to things that one may do in a group outing or with the

intention of meeting up with strangers in a common place for a common purpose after dark. Nightlife usually involves socialization and entertainment that is not found at one’s home and not accustomed to being present in daytime hours. Long gone are the days when people worked nine to five with weekends off. This staple of old was a huge dictator of nightlife when the world of work was a predictable place.

Weeknight excursions did not gain major popularity until the hippie days of the late 1960’s rolled around. The Vietnam War era was a time of great change and internal evolution as many eager minds were infused with the ideals of their professors and gurus. Nighttime vigils were held in the name of peace and pursuits like transcendental meditation were on the upswing. Many college students gathered together in the evenings to partake in parties and classes where LSD and Marijuana aided in their quest for evolution.

This nightlife sprung up on college campuses and began to slowly meander into Middle American pop culture. The nineteen seventies was a decade of nightlife at its peak. Disco ruled the airwaves and discos popped up with the frequency of Laundromats. Those who did not care to dance the night away often opted for a ticket to rock concerts where guitar gods would wield their mighty axes and tout the anthem of party all night and sleep all day. Nightlife for this generation was carefree with few worries of serious diseases and stiff criminal punishments for the partygoers.

The ‘80’s came in like the kiss of death as AIDS became a staple on the evening

news. The Me generation was working the stock market and frequenting the cocaine dealers. Nightlife was still the rage, but care had to be taken to avoid the ever encroaching plague and community groups that set out to end drinking and driving. The war on drugs was kicking off and nightlife was beginning to feel the wrath of the moral majority. The new millennium has come and gone with no real noticeable decline in nightlife popularity.

Despite economic ups and downs and raging political quandaries people still desire to break from mundane reality and walk into the night with optimism and hard earned disposable income. Nightlife may ebb and flow but will always be present as a global excepted staple and a result of human demand. Dealing with the remains of a day though nightlife activities can calm and invigorate the spirit. One may recharge their internal battery and mesh minds with inquisitive counterparts over coffee or cocktails. There will forever be a place for nightlife in society. For as long as there is darkness there will be those who long to enter it with abandon.
