My favourite film is Forrest Gump. It’s an American comedy-drama based on a novel written by Winston Groom. The film was made in 1994 and is directed by Robert Zemeckis. It has won lots of awards and nominations, including the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. Forrest is played by Tom Hanks and the other main characters are Bubba, his best friend, Lt. Dan Taylor and Jenny, the love of his life.
The story is about a boy brought up by his mother in Greenbow, Alabama. He goes through life meeting famous people and finding himself in historic situations. Forrest wears leg braces and has learning difficulties, but on his first day at school, he meets Jenny, who tells him that to get out of danger he has to….‘Run, Forrest, Run!’ He eventually breaks free from his braces and learns to run incredibly fast. His speed wins him a
...football scholarship to college and later he joins the army. He goes to war in Vietnam where he meets his best friend Bubba. Bubba and his family know everything there is to know about the shrimping business.
My favourite scene is where Bubba and Forrest are scrubbing the barrack floors and polishing their boots. Bubba tells him all about the different ways you can cook shrimp: [Bubba voice] “You can barbecue it, boil it, bake it, sauté it. There’s shrimp-kabobs, shrimp Creole, shrimp gumbo…..Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried…There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich……….and that…..that's about it.”
Forrest saves many of his army comrades after they’ve been attacked by the enemy. He carries them
out of the jungle, but unfortunately Bubba dies in his arms and Lt. Dan loses his legs. Forrest is hit by a bullet in the butt-ocks and later takes up Ping-Pong in the army hospital. He is a gifted player and soon plays for his country against the Chinese. He wins a lot of sponsorship money and becomes a shrimping boat captain to keep his promise to Bubba. He names his first boat and all the others after Jenny. Lt. Dan joins him and they become very successful in the shrimping business. Forrest gives a large cheque to Bubba’s family and the church.
Lt. Dan also invests their money in the Apple Corporation. Jenny comes to visit and gives Forrest new trainers, but then leaves again. Then for no apparent reason Forrest starts running. He runs right across the United States of America to the ocean and back, then eventually he stops. He goes to visit Jenny and discovers he has a son called Forrest Junior. They get married but Jenny dies and Forrest brings up his son back in Greenbow.
I would recommend you see the film if you haven’t already done so, as it makes you feel happy and you want to do something worthwhile with your life, like Forrest did.
