This self-reflection will discuss the influence of studying IIC on my communication skills. The chapter "Becoming a Positive Listener and Improving Communication" had a significant impact on me. Understanding the significance of communication in our daily lives, I have actively utilized the techniques learned from this chapter in real-life scenarios. A notable instance occurred during our society committee meeting last Monday afternoon. Before the meeting, we had a chance to share recent situations.
We are concerned about Angela, a committee member who recently experienced the passing of her grandmother. Previously, we knew that her grandmother had been admitted to the hospital. Upon hearing this information, we recognized the need for Angela to have someone to confide in and express her emotions. Although I could only provide my presence as a sympathetic listen
...er, I understood the significance of using words to demonstrate my active involvement in listening.
When I communicate with others, I use various skills like , clarifying, and giving feedback. This is especially important when speaking with someone who speaks unclearly and often mumbles. Despite feeling sorry, this person is uncertain about the specific reasons for their regret. To learn more and get background information, I clarify by asking if their grandmother ever mentioned anything to them before. Through this inquiry, it becomes clear that one sentence repeatedly mentioned by the individual is their grandmother expressing a desire for them to visit her home and stay for a few days—reminiscent of their time living together during secondary school. However, due to certain circumstances or decisions made later on, they were unable to fulfill this wish, which ultimately contributes to thei
current feelings of regret.
Upon discovering the cause, I attempt to rephrase her words and motivate her to divulge more. She undergoes sorrow but refrains from shedding tears due to the ensuing fatigue. Nevertheless, I advise against harboring pessimistic feelings and instead urge their expression, as I am aware of their impact on our well-being. Ultimately, I offer input drawn from personal experience by recounting my emotions and subsequent actions. My objective is for her progress. I comprehend the significance of attentive listening and effective communication, and I am grateful for the opportunity to employ these acquired skills.
