Poultry farming in Tanzania has become a major source of income in families in the rural areas. In earlier days, farmers used only a traditional way of farming by letting free poultry in the morning to fetch for food and later in the evening let them in the small houses for shelter.

The farmers were not using vaccination or methods of treatment against diseases, but instead they slaughter and eat a poultry if seems to be weak. Currently, this situation is changing due to many efforts put in modernizing poultry farming in rural areas in Tanzania. Poultry production accounts for the major part of all meat produced in many developing countries, and is an integral component of nearly all rural, peri-urban and urban households. Poultry are of considerable significance to rural as well as national e


conomies and an important source of animal protein.

Poultry production systems should provide fresh air, clean feed and water, protection against predators, shelter from cold, rain, wind, sun and excessive heat; as well as a source of heat when birds are young. Basically, the birds need to be able to grow, sleep and lay eggs in comfort. The birds should also be free from stress and disease. In the commercial poultry projects, a lot of resources are invested in purchasing chicks, building chicken coop, utensils for feeding the chicken and medicine to mention a few. In practice, these kinds of projects are owned by individuals, group of people of institutions.

Sometimes such poultry projects work well, but it is a sad fact that in this projects are done without proper management skills or appropriate technology as the results, the owner

of such projects may run in losses without knowing... Why do such projects so often fail? Commercial poultry-keeping is not the easy income-generating activity many people believe it to be. Some kind of special training may be required on for better poultry-keeping business. Sometimes people do not realize how much investment is needed. Things can go wrong. Amongst the most common problems are:

The management in commercial poultry-keeping should be put in good focus. For example, there must be strict hygiene control ( vaccination against disease, foot dips at the door, disinfecting the coop). There should be enough space for each chick, sufficient water, feeders, nest boxes and perches. If day-old chicks are bought, they should be kept warm and fed a correct diet. A few stated stands should be followed for well established poultry business. Therefore, there should be a system in place to keep track of all these important issues and have a cost and benefit analysis for the project.

Record keeping for poultry products production and income (cash) records are needed. For example all eggs played, sold chicken, sold manure, number dead chicken and cause, wages for poultry project workers, electric bills, water bills, vet nary costs, amount and type of food consumed per day.


The primary objective is designing and implementing a PMS that will keep records of poultry farming so as to facilitate the production process in the long run. To ensure quality decision making on poultry production such as eggs and chicken Otherwise there will be a waste of time money and energy. To limit introduction of infection into a poultry operation Produce official report on Poultry-keeping.

and meeting production targets are good management practices that allow the identification and solution of problems. When a problem is identified, the next step is to at- tempt to fix it. Identifying the cause of and fixing a problem is an important part of the farmer’s knowledge base, and is likely to assist in preventing a recurrence of the problem (Barnett et al. , 2001). Records kept over time can help identify some of the possible causes of problems. One of the most useful record-keeping documents is a diary, which can be used in combination with record-keeping sheets to record major activities, problems identi fied, equipment repairs, deviations from equipment settings, and any staff issues.

However automatically a database may be used later on to transfer records. Records of production, growth, feed, egg weights, mortalities, treatments given, and response to treatments should be maintained to assist investigations of sub-optimal performance.

The approach is to develop and deploy the Poultry Management System. The Poultry Management System will keep records on :

  • Chicken and food supplements bought.
  • S ales of Eggs and Poultry meat.
  • Transport on sales.
  • Labour work details such as salary and duties.
  • Production of eggs.
  • Chicken shelter expenses such as light.

The system will also give a detailed report on the above particulars daily ,weekly and annually.


Literatures argue that poultry are free to range, tend to be the village poultry, or scavenging poultry, kept by smallholders and households in tropical areas. It has been estimated that 80% of the poultry population in Africa is found in these traditional production systems, sometimes called . Little attention is given to this means of production by authorities and many

development programmes even though between 30% to 100% of the animal protein consumed is from this source.

These systems have been a traditional component of small farms all over the developing world for centuries and is likely to continue as such in the future. The flocks are small in size but are an important asset providing their owners with meat and eggs that can be consumed by the family. They are also bartered or sold to provide additional income, and may also be used to fulfil social obligations. Rural poultry provide manure, whilst they are active in pest control. In many countries the birds are owned and managed by women and children.

Poultry -production with improved management of birds can be very successful and can make a lot of money. But the risks are very high indeed and the cost of failure may be huge. In many parts , ordinary village poultry production involves chickens scavenging for their food. They usually have no special house, but sleep perhaps in a shed or cook house. Few eggs are laid, many young birds die, or are killed; growth is slow. But this system involves

little financial risk to the farmer. The local chickens are well adapted to local conditions and more resistant to disease.

Too often, people believe that there is little point in improving village poultry. But village poultry production can be greatly improved without much risk of failure from village to commercial level.
