Know how to support children and young people experiencing transitions

Describe the various transitions that children and young people may undergo.

In a nursery setting, the main transitions include room moves, where children move to older rooms as they grow. They also go through school moves, such as transitioning from nursery to school, school to secondary school, and secondary school to college. Additionally, children and young people may experience other changes like moving houses, parents separating, changing caregivers, or switching schools/nurseries.

The technique for providing support for different transitions can be explained as follows:

When parents separate, caregivers can explain why it happens and provide support to both parents and children by keeping them informed about the situation.

It is important for the staff to follow the same behavior management strategies so that the children will understand the consequences of negative behavior. In my own role, I set a positive example for the children to emulate. I also provide fair praise to all children and consistently manage unwanted behavior to ensure clarity of expectations.

These assessments are used to identify areas that need more attention. In the children's learning journeys, we use learning and development audits to track the areas covered and ensure a diverse range of activities are planned.

I believe that monitoring children's development through these methods is effective because it allows us to easily track the areas we are focusing on and how children are progressing in those areas.

I can improve my practice by using various approaches to observations, such as tracker observations. Additionally, I can enhance my practice by including more photographs and evidence of their work in their learning journeys, enabling parents to see what their children have been doing instead of just reading about it.
