This essay is going to talk about the character traits of Peter Brownrigg in Geoffrey Trease’s Cue for Treason. Peter Brownrigg is the novel’s narrator and protagonist. He is fourteen years old and he lives in Country Cumberland. One day, he throws a rock to Sir Phillip which makes him get in a lot of trouble, he has to leave his hometown for his own safety, and then Peter starts on the journey. Peter is independent, rational and courageous. He knows how to take care of himself, instead of relying on his parents.

Peter Brownrigg is independent. When he going to leave his home he tells his mother that he is going take care of himself. “I’ll be all right.”
I comforted my mother. “I’ll get out of the district; I’ll ship across into Scotland perhaps; I’ll get work, and I’ll send word to you that I’m all right. Then in a few months, maybe, I shall be able to come back, and the whole thing be forgotten. ”(31) “I’d always wanted to see the outside world, I’d always wanted adventure, and now I was going to get it with a vengeance. ” (32) As you can see, Peter is an independent boy, he does not want
his mother too worry about him, so he says that he is going Scotland, and planning his journey.
Peter is independent because he does not need to rely on his parents as normal teenagers do. Peter Brownrigg is also rational. Although he is jealous of Kit because she is good at acting as a boy. Peter realizes that Kit is girl when he pushes on her chest when they are fighting. However, he promises Kit to help her keep the secret. “I shan’t tell anyone,” I said. “You won’t? Thanks Peter. Ever so much. ” (85) Peter wants to reveal the secret to Desmond because he is jealous of Kit’s acting skills but he doesn’t as he wants to protect Kit’s identity.
Therefore, Peter is rational, because he will not his emotions to make his decision, and therefore he rationally thinks. Lastly, throughout the novel there are many examples of Peter Brownrigg‘s courageous actions. For example, Peter throws a rock at Sir Phillip, so others will have more time to get away, he climbs the wall of the yellow gentlemen‘s house to retrieve his copy of the play, and while Tom Boyd is missing, he tells Kit that he will go find Tom. “We must find out-if we can possibly get inside,” said Kit. I’ll go,” I said.
He is courageous because he decides to go into the peel tower to find Tom immediately even though he does not know how dangerous it is if he searches for Tom. Peter is willing to risk his life for Tom, the queen and his family, which is courageous thing to do. In addition, Peter
is an independent, rational and courageous because he would do anything that could help the people that he cares for. When Peter promises Kit that he is going to keep the secret for her, it shows that he is independent thinker and courageous.
Peter’s parents are not around him, and he has no adults that he could ask for their opinions of should he keeps Kit’s secret or not. He decides to keeps the secret for Kit, which also is a courageous action too. when others figured out that Kit is girl and Peter shields Kit, people from the acting company mays kicks them out. On the other hand, sometimes Peter is irrational, such as he decides to go to peel tower to save Tom, and sneak in to yellow- gentlemen’s house, although it’s not safe. Lastly, the character traits that is used to describe Peter is independent, rational and courageous.
