Empowering Children to create a Caring Culture Essay Example
Introduction
The empowerment of children in modern society entails acknowledging and tackling the prejudices encountered by young children, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. It is crucial for adults to employ impartial educational approaches that foster creativity, enabling children to confront and combat the detrimental consequences of bias during their growth. By acquiring empowerment, children gain proficiency in critical thinking and become catalysts for societal transformation, ultimately contributing to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering cultural cohesion.
Discrimination against marginalized children, such as racism, sexism, classism, and hetero-sexism, violates their rights in modern societies.
Education as Empowerment for Children
To address mistreatment challenges, it is crucial to provide unbiased education to all children. According to Derman (1993), restructuring the education system empowers teachers and children alike. Inclusive education helps develop skills for navigating cultural differences (Derman, 1993
...). Adjusting power dynamics within schools allows teachers and students to have a voice in curriculum, policies, and decision-making. Empowering teachers positively impacts their work while ultimately empowering children and improving their attitudes towards learning (Derman, 1993).
Children empowerment in societies allows them to improve their level of comfort by learning about cultural diversities and developing positive perspectives towards cultural differences. Empowered children become aware of negative social stereotypes and gain a better understanding of their own identities and emotions regarding human differences (Derman, 1993).
If children are empowered, they are protected from harmful psychological effects and can also challenge racism, sexism, and classism as they grow. Racism is particularly damaging to children as it undermines their appreciation for cultural diversities, individual identities, and perceptions. Therefore, empowerment helps children resist the harmful impact of racism.
For instance, a child who does not speak English as their
native language may feel alienated and disturbed in an English-speaking environment. However, education provides support and fosters the child's development, allowing for effective socialization in multicultural environments.
Education plays a crucial role in teaching children about cultural diversity, promoting respect for different racial or ethnic groups (Derman, 1993). It also helps them comprehend the negative effects of racial stereotypes. Unfortunately, gender stereotypes have limited children's growth and hindered their ability to choose their own educational experiences. This has led to uneven cognitive development and potentially inaccurate assessments of their abilities (Derman, 1993). To empower children effectively and create a nurturing environment, it is essential to take into account each child's unique goals, life experiences, cultural backgrounds, and age.
It is necessary to foster the abilities and capabilities of each child through education, nurturing their confidence and promoting comfortability through interactions in a multicultural environment. This includes developing critical thinking skills in children, enabling them to recognize and address bias and unfair behaviors in society such as stereotyping. Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate the ability of children to treat others fairly without prejudice (Derman, 1993).
