Does the quality of a four-year college matter Essay Example
When discussing college prestige, it's crucial to consider the basis of comparison. Some parents prioritize status for their children in undergraduate education and may go to great lengths to secure admission at esteemed schools like Brown, Duke, or Cal Tech. This pursuit is often motivated by career ambitions and social standing rather than a guarantee of academic excellence. While it's indisputable that prestigious colleges attract talented students and earning a degree from such institutions can yield benefits in the job market down the line.
While attending college, young individuals may not necessarily acquire extensive academic knowledge. However, employers who have employed recent graduates like newspaper reporters or research assistants can affirm this statement. Several economic studies have been conducted to determine the advantages of a college education based on the quality of the institution a
...ttended. Hoxby's (1998) research is specifically referenced, which compared the lifetime earnings of students who began their college journey in 1960, 1972, and 1982. The study discovered that if a student selects an expensive Rank 1 college like Dartmouth over a good and much less costly public in Rank 3 like UVA, they would recover six times the tuition difference during their career.
While economists generally agree that a good student will succeed regardless of their school, Hoxby believes that attending a top school improves a student's prospects. However, the article "Is Harvard Worth It?" (Kahn 2000) contradicts Hoxby's view and states that economists are uncertain about the economic benefits of attending an elite college. Kahn (2000) cites research by Kruegger and Dale (2000) as a direct challenge to Hoxby's findings.
As per Kruegger's (2000) research, attending a selective college does not lead
to any financial benefit for intelligent and skilled students who perform equally well in their careers, regardless of the institution they attend. While economists have varied opinions on this subject, most agree that an elite education offers improved accessibility to particular prestigious jobs for less affluent individuals. Opting for a costly mediocre private college over a top public one does not provide any economic advantage. However, talented students can excel anywhere. Therefore, parents deciding between sending their child to in-state tuition at the University of Illinois or Harvard University should consider that attending a distinguished university holds significance for most people and can create opportunities by providing a form of pedigree.
Although attending a prestigious university may impress others, it does not ensure a child's success as a human being. While financial success may be attainable, genuine success stems from how one was raised and their self-esteem. As such, it is crucial to inquire about the child's objectives and aspirations for their future.
When it comes to attending an Ivy League institution, multiple factors come into play. One must take into account their interests and passions as acquiring a prestigious degree without passion holds no significance compared to any other college degree. Additionally, affordability is crucial in order to prevent causing excessive financial stress on the family or child. It should also be noted that obtaining a college degree does not necessarily guarantee success; half of all millionaires and billionaires possess degrees while the other half do not. Ultimately, distinctive qualities often determine an individual's potential for success.
Although I previously held an opposing opinion, it is important to acknowledge the importance of pedigrees in multiple fields, particularly
in science. An individual's academic background can significantly affect research and progress. Respected institutions such as M.I.T., Caltech, and Berkeley hold significant sway among scientists.
The Wharton School of Business holds a significant reputation in specific circles, similar to Law and Medicine, and has the potential to make a lasting impact on individuals.
The primary worry is the objective of the individual's offspring. Is their aspiration to journey and make an impact based solely on obtaining a degree from Harvard? Although it may serve as a starting point, it may not be adequate in the long run. The determining element could be the individuals they interact with. Does the University of Illinois department have high esteem or does Harvard's reputation hold more significance? Nevertheless, irrespective of department repute, Harvard will always receive admiration from others. In America, it is customary to inquire about one's profession to determine their earning potential and social standing. Opting for attending Harvard instead of the University of Illinois would indubitably be remarkable.
Brooke Shields did not attend the school. However, Jodie Foster did attend Harvard University, highlighting the importance of parents providing their children with every advantage possible in America. Making decisions that lead to economic survival is crucial, and attending a prestigious university puts one in the elite class of the nation. Therefore, while apologies are due to the University of Illinois, my choice would be Harvard.
Upon graduation of their child, parents can rest assured that their child's education cannot be taken away. It is comforting to know that the University of Illinois will not elicit a lackluster response from others. However, it is imperative that parents ensure their child gains knowledge
from their time spent at the university. For instance, if the child desires to pursue ecotourism, they would benefit greatly from attending UI, as it boasts the top program in the field, outshining even Harvard's mediocre department.
So, what will the parents choose for their child's university? If they are in ecotourism, they would likely choose Illinois, where the child could potentially receive the John Doe Chair in Ecotourism. However, the child may begin to doubt their own worth. On the other hand, to the average person who is unfamiliar with ecotourism and Illinois' prestigious department, Harvard may seem like the more prestigious option due to its history of notable alumni. Despite this, affordability is also a factor to consider. If the parent can afford it, Harvard may be the better choice. However, if the department at Illinois is well-known and can ensure that the child stays in their desired field, it may be the smarter choice.
Regrettably, a renowned educational institution confers immediate legitimacy on a child without it actually being theirs. It rightfully belongs to those who have preceded them and left their mark on history, possibly including graduates of the University of Illinois who were subsequently invited to join the faculty at Harvard upon winning the Nobel Prize. Although I cannot make the choice for any parent, there are several factors I would ask them to contemplate in order to assist them in making their decision.
