I'm a senior in undergrad studying neuroscience. Although I study biological sciences, I was brought up in a very musical family and was encouraged to develop artistically since I was 5. I grew up in a suburb near Chicago My family are immigrants

I should learn how to not take things so personally. Remember that people have their problems too. Despite different work/volunteer/research experiences, I still believe I have a lot more to learn about people. Everyone is case by case. You can't learn about a person in a classroom. I learned a lot about people who are very stressed out the hard way. I started to tear up at work once about it but then the next day I realized that I should have not taken it so personally so that it affected how I appeared to my coworkers and other patients. I've learned to be sympathetic to people, but sometimes to sympathetic.

Artistic, innovative, work with your hands. I grew up with it not really thinking it was something that I wanted to do. But when I started assisting my dad in high school I started to appreciate the differences that my dad makes with his patients. I even got my tooth knocked out and that was when I realized that I was taking my oral health for granted. I was thinking about something in the health field like medicine or veterinarian sciences, but once I shadowed dentistry more, I like the close pt interaction, the atmosphere,the hands-on-ness, the ability to provide the patients what they need right away. Dentistry is more about teeth, it's about how patients see themselves and others. It's how you chew food. It's something that you grow up with your entire life. Teeth are a part of your identity. Most kids get braces (I didn't because I didn't want it to get in the way of my clarinet playing). People value their smiles and I want them to be proud of their smiles. Also, it sucks to be in pain. People sometimes underestimate how Doctors deal with things that might be more urgent like high blood pressure, heart disease, diseases, and because of that the process of making patients feel better is too long. That type of treatment process isn't for me. I like having patients get treated right away.

So it's good to take a break and reflect a little bit. Work with the community and by working with the community or a community then i am able to remember why I'm here.

Undergrad - academics hard Will probably always be hard But most difficult will be learning how to work with difficult patients e.g. language barrier, very young, people who are afraid of dentist. Everything is case by case and cannot be taught in the classroom. I know there might be classes that teach behavioral science but what you learn may not be applied until you actually see the person in the chair. Certain interpersonal skills cannot be learned, but it can develop over time. I learned a lot as a dental assistant.

I like research and would like to continue to learn more about the field that I have done research in already. I really like my research because it optimizes oral health by only trying to change how we behave. Prevention Optimization New medicine and technology is great and all, but sometimes we can prevent some health problems from ever happening by changing how we view dentistry. New medicine and technology is very expensive. Research is expensive. All these costs trickle down and then oral health services become too costly for patients. The US spends so much $ on health that we should do something about it. PREVENTION IS #1. Then BASIC #2. Then MAJOR #3. I think working with Dr. Inglehart has definitely expanded what I see in dentistry. I want to continue serving the underserved population I am curious and want to learn about different people I'm excited to learn new techniques and dental technology I am familiar with the dental field My mission lines up with Michigan's philosophy to EXCEL IN ALL EDUCATION, INNOVATION, AND SERVICE

Refuse the sheet. Would not report right away. Ask them to get rid of it and stop sharing. Try to discourage student from cheating in future because consequences and not fair to other students. The world isn't black and white and student might be having a hard time. If that's the case, try to talk to student and see what I can do to help them. If cheating persists, will have to report regardless because not fair to other students. Want the academic experience to be maximum for all students. Need to keep integrity of dental field.
