I started my day waking up as usual and placed my earplugs In right away. I thought that was radar because I was so used to talking to my boyfriend on the phone right away, and that day I couldn't speak one word. I thought It was also hard to communicate with my family since they didn't know an ounce of sign language.

After getting ready, I finally walked to the bus stop where Argue could sign with me. I felt really comfortable signing with her & she made me feel like I wasn't facing the day alone. We both walked on the bus and the comfort inside fled fast. Is everybody looking?! " "Can everybody see my earplugs?! " If I weren't signing to Argue, I was looking out the window since I couldn't liste

n to music.

As soon as we walked into school, we both looked at each other with nervous, yet eager, eyes. Could we do it? My first period class was physics, and the second I walked in, people started to question and stare at my earplugs. My closest friends, especially Nick and Christian, were snickering and laughing due to my lack of communication skills, (not the best start to my day...

But my good friend Gabby was really patient with me and helped me a lot. Of course, the one topic we had to start was sound. Mr.. R, my teacher, wasn't that cooperative with my hearing; in fact, I felt like he stood the farthest away from me so I couldn't hear a hint! Not the best way to start my day if you ask me! was sign language, and that was where I felt 100% confident.

Nobody stared, nobody snickered, and everybody was really patient with me. I think being with Torte and Argue really helped my confidence.

One thing I did start to notice was a lingering headache and some tenderness in my ears. I took an David and that definitely helped! Schnook really took into consideration my hearing and made me feel very comfortable. That was the best part of my day! Third period was lunch and that was interesting. My earplugs really came to use when I didn't have to hear al those annoying, loud conversations In the lunchroom (which was very, very nice!! ).

At one point, I couldn't even eat because the sound of myself chewing and swallowing was so Irritating!

Fourth period was English was the one class period that shocked me beyond words. Right when I walked In, my teacher announced to everybody that I was deaf and could not talk, which I believe was quite Ignorant. Some kid actually said, "She can't hear us!? Hay that's so stupid! " and my teacher did not say a word! The class would say Jokes, laugh, look at me (who was straight faced since I couldn't hear hat was so funny), and then laughed even harder! How Immature? I felt Like an animal being made fun off I couldn't wait to get out of that class... Was embarrassed my earplugs! I could follow his lecture right along & he turned videos' volume up.

He was really respectful in the way that he didn't make a huge deal of my deafness. Sixth period was CAT and

I had a test. I thought having the earplugs in was very beneficial to my focus. Maybe that's why I did so well!! My last period was gym. Half way through I decided to try and talk, but before talking, Bent was really helpful in translating my sign to others. He really understood how hard it must have been to others.

Camille, a close friend of mine, told me I was really quiet and spoke really weird, which I expected. I didn't take out my earplugs until I got home because I wanted to avoid a massive headache! After my deaf day experience, I am very appreciative of my hearing. Deaf/ hard of hearing individuals do not get the credit they deserve. Overall, I think wearing earplugs was really eye opening to me as a hearing, sign language student going into speech pathology. I find myself sharing this to others all the time Just because it had such a huge impact on me.
