Introduction I.
Throughout our lives, we meet different people. Although some may leave, there are always a few who stay with us for a long time.
There are a number of people in my life who will always hold a special place in my heart. However, John Hettinger had a profound impact on shaping who I am today. Although some viewed him simply as a boss or someone involved in the horse business, others saw him as conceited and wealthy. For me, he held an even greater importance - he was like family.
John Hettinger was a constant presence in my life for 22 years until he passed away in September of 2008. During that period, even though he had financial stability, he consistently demonstrated loyalty, generosity, and confidence.
John showed loyalty to everyone he knew, which included the long-time employees on his farm. Even
...though he could have made more money by selling a horse at a higher price, John chose to sell it to one of his friends at a lower price.
By selling his company, Fasig-Tipton, John not only ensured the well-being of all shareholders but also displayed remarkable generosity. Despite his own financial circumstances, he consistently provided assistance to others, such as contributing towards my brother's rehabilitation expenses when our parents could no longer afford it.
John made sure that his employees were fairly compensated for their work. He also ensured that if he earned money from selling a horse, those who helped him with the transaction would benefit too. Besides being loyal and generous, John showed great confidence in both himself and his work.
Despite his confidence in himself and his work, he never exhibited arrogance
He acknowledged that he possessed the finest farm in New York, but abstained from overtly boasting about it. Instead, he opted to demonstrate leadership through his farm rather than mere words.
Despite his strong opinions and beliefs, John Hettinger never forced them upon others or believed that his own opinions were the only valid ones. In conclusion, John Hettinger, despite being financially well off, remained loyal, generous, and confident.
All in all, John taught me the true essence of life and the importance of being optimistic about others. He taught me to appreciate every moment and not to overlook anything as the future is unpredictable. Furthermore, he emphasized the significance of cherishing our loved ones as we never know what the next day may bring. I attribute my current self to him and will forever appreciate the privilege of having crossed paths with him.
