Matter: Occupies space, has a mass, exists in 3 physical states namely solids, liquids & gases; composed of particles. Solid: have fixed shape, fixed volume. Liquid: takes shape of part of container below liquid level.

No fixed shape, has fixed volume, flow easily. Gas: when collected into vessels occupies all space inside vessel, takes shape of container, no fixed shape or volume. 0 Arrangement of particles in solids, liquids & gases Attractive force among particles strongest in solid. Particles are close together& arranged in a fixed pattern. Weaker attractive force in liquids than solids.

Particles not as close as in solid but more closer than in gas. Particles loosely packed , have freedom of moving.  In gases particles aren't closely packed or orderly arranged. Attractive force in particles very weak.

Can move freely & randomly at different speeds

. Because antiparticle distances in gas particles are very high , it can be compressed easily. When in a container, moving gas molecules collide with wall of container thus exerting pressure on the wall in every direction.

When rate of collision lessees on wall increases, pressure exerted by gas increases.

When collisions decrease, pressure exerted decreases. ; Factors affecting behavior of gas: temperature, pressure, volume, amount of substance. 0 Behavior of gas when 2 factors are changed at a time keeping others constant 0 Variation of temperature Vs. Pressure of fixed amount of gas of constant Volume ACTIVITY: Heat the test tube with Bunsen burner keeping the stopper away from the body. Stopper will be thrown out from test tube due to increase of pressure inside.

Thus, pressure of gas increases when temperature is increased. When temperature of gas is increased, spee

of gas molecules is increased. Thus, no. Of collisions of gas molecules per unit time per unit area is increased. Thus, pressure too increases. (Low temperature-low pressure , High temperature- high pressure) Variation of volume with temperature off fixed amount of gas at constant pressure Take 2 identical bottles and 2 same size balloons.

Set apparatus as shown. Keep one bottle in hot water, other in cold water. Volume of balloon fixed to bottle in hot water increases. Thus, volume increases as temperature increases.

Variation of pressure with volume off fixed amount of gas at constant temperature ACTIVITY: Close the hole at one end of a bicycle pump with a finger and push piston in. You will sense increasing pressure.

When volume of a fixed amount of gas at constant temperature is decreased, pressure increases. When volume is increased , pressure decreases. 0 Relationship between amount off gas and pressure under constant temperature and volume ACTIVITY: Blow air into deflated tube with a suitable pump and observe the hardness. Hardness is increased due to increase of pressure inside the tube.

ACTIVITY: Blow small amount of air into a balloon, touch and observe hardness.

Blow more air and feel again. Hardness increases due to pressure increase. Thus, pressure of gas at constant volume & temperature increases with the amount of gas. 0 Relationship between the amount of gas and the volume under constant pressure and temperature ACTIVITY: Blow air into a balloon with an air pump as shown.

Volume of air inside the pump gradually decreases & volume of air inside balloon gets increased. Thus, when the amount of air inside the balloon increases its volume too increases.
